The Lima Rotary Club announces Cycling for Life 2015!

The Lima Rotary will again sponsor a stationary cycling event at the Lima Mall on Saturday, October 31st from 10 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The event will allow firms to challenge local competitors to see which team can cycle farther in ten minutes.  Similar events were held in 2012 and 2013 but no competition was held in 2014 as the Lima Rotary was celebrating their Centennial Anniversary.

This event is meant to allow the participants to show their cycling skills and to inform the community of the International Service activities of the Lima Rotary.   International Service is one of the five Avenues of Service for Rotary International.  Rotary is the largest service club in the world with nearly 32,000 clubs in 133 countries.  The Lima Rotary Club was the 112th Rotary Club and was started in 1915.

Lima Rotary has maintained a focus on International Service continuously since 2005.  Club efforts have been focused on providing water, water distribution systems, improving schools through rehabilitation, the addition of learning centers to schools including computers and other furniture through alignments with MESA as well.  Lima Rotary has also worked to involve youth through creating sports facilities to inhibit gang growth.  The latest effort has been a sanitation project in the Village of Pinel, near Tegucigalpa, Honduras.  Lima has made tireless efforts to continuously develop the key to good and effective projects with relationships in the countries of Central America.

Water and sanitation projects have been shown to have a positive impact of reducing diseases due to the consumption of unclean water and reducing the incidence of childhood deaths.  The Lima Rotary will in the near future submit a grant proposal to Rotary International for a Global Sanitation Project of $198,000.  This project will be the largest International Service project ever initiated by the Lima Rotary with the cooperation of 8 other Rotary Clubs and five districts from Canada to California.

Participating Rotary Clubs and districts will contribute to this project based on their interest and because of assistance that Lima Rotary has helped them in the past with guidance and relationships. Rotary International closely monitors such large water and sanitation projects and similar grant projects have saved lives in the communities where they have been implemented.  The Lima Rotary has already raised over $6,000.00 for this project and the Cycling for Life event will hopefully raise an additional $7,000.00 to fully fund the Global Water Project.

Lima Rotary is partnering with the Lima YMCA for the Cycling for Life event.  The event will allow two-person teams from local entities to challenge competitor organizations to see which team can pedal the farthest in ten minutes.  Companies can register their team for the competition by visiting the Lima Rotary website at www.limarotary@clubrunner.com.  There is a $20.00 contribution to register a team for this event.  The two fastest teams will be awarded gift certificates of their choice to Cranker’s Cycling, the Lima Mall or the Chamber of Commerce.

There will also be a Men’s and Women’s Individual competition on the day of the event.  Registration for the individual competition will begin on Saturday, October 31st starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Lima Mall.  There is a $10.00 contribution in order to compete in the individual competition.  Winners in each individual division will be awarded their choice of gift certificates from Cranker’s Cycling, Lima Mall or the Chamber of Commerce.
