Lima Rotary sponsors Cycling for Life event.

As announced last Monday at the Rotary meeting, the Lima Rotary is working with the Lima YMCA to hold Cycling for Life on Saturday, October 31st at the Lima Mall.  The event will be adjacent to Macy’s Department Store and will last from 10:00 am until 2:00 p.m.  The purpose of the event is to allow businesses to challenge their friends and competitors to see which two-person team can cycle the farthest in ten minutes.  We might even be able to have the Lima Rotary take on a fellow Rotary Club in District 6600 in a challenge.

The meaning of the name for the event, Cycling for Life, is to highlight the importance of clean water and sanitation for developing countries.  The Lima Rotary will close-out within a few weeks a project started two years ago under President Michael Schoenhofer.   That project involved helping a small village in Honduras, Villa Peniel, to install pvc piping that connected the houses to a new sewage treatment plant built by the regional government.  The numerous latrines in the village had fouled many of the wells and residents were experiencing many health problems. Attached are several pictures of the Villa Peniel project.

Another part of the Cycling for Life event is to solicit funds from Lima Rotarians and businesses to complete the fund raising for submission of a Global Water Project later this year.  Rotarian Bob Ruehl is working with five other Rotary Clubs from Pennsylvania to California for submitting this grant.  This project would total $198,000.00 and be the largest International Service project ever undertaken by the Lima Rotary.  The Club has already raised $6,000.00 and would like to raise another $5,000.00 in order to fully fund the $10,000.00 minimum amount needed to submit the Global Water Project to Rotary International .

Rotarian Dan Best has agreed to be the Event Chairman for the Cycling for Life event and he is in need of your assistance.  First, six to volunteer s will be needed on Saturday, October 31st—three from 9:00 a.m. until Noon and three from Noon until 3:00 p.m.  Sign-up sheets will be on the tables at the Rotary Club meetings.  A second need is for two person teams to ride in the event and to challenge your nemesis.  Teams can register by logging onto the Rotary website at: www.LimaRotary.com and click on the Forms tab.  Prizes will be given for the top two teams and individuals can also register to ride on the day of the event on Saturday, October 31st.
