Lima Rotary Club welcomes three new members.
The Lima Rotary Club welcomed three new members at its meeting on December 22: LaShae Torres with Coleman Behavioral Health, Jeff Fitzgerald from Your Hometown Stations, and Kelli DeLong from Springview Manor. The club also awarded its quarterly scholarships, bringing the total amount given to help local students pursue their educational goals to more than $530,000. The guest speakers for the meeting were Gary Leppla and Paul Droste from the OSU Alumni Band. They're leading the charge to reinstate fired band director John Waters. They say the allegations against him were largely untrue and they admire his innovations with the band.

Rotary Christmas Auction Raises $12,000!
Great gifts, silly games, wonderful music and good fellowship highlighted this year's Rotary Christmas Auction. Chuck Sommers set the mood for the evening with Christmas music played on his saxophone, then Elvis arrived for a medley of his hits as a prelude to the auction of the bust of Elvis. Harold Bischoff was the lucky (?!) Rotarian who will get to keep Elvis in his office for the next year. Jay Begg did a great job auctioning off the dozens of gifts that were donated, and Bill Timmermeister walked off with the evening's prize of a rare bottle of scotch...so if he invites you over for drinks - accept! Overall, we raised $12,000 which will be split between the Salvation Army and the Lima Rotary Foundation. Thanks to everyone who attended and who contributed to make the event a huge success!

Update on the Villa Peniel Sewer Project & Global Water Project
The Sewer Project in Villa Peniel, Honduras is moving along and will hopefully be closed out in the next several months.

The Lima Rotary Club Members have positively responded to the request to contribute $20.00 to the  Global Water Project that the Lima Rotary will finalize later this Rotary Year.  The giving by the Club Members may meet or exceed the level of participation to the micro credit project led by Ram Pai several years ago.

The fund raising effort for the Global Water Project now moves to the Corporate campaign with letters going out this week.  Global Projects have a minimum budget of $30,000.00 and the International Rotary Foundation will provide a minimum of $15,000 toward an accepted project.
This fund raising effort will allow the Lima Rotary to support a large Global Water Project with sustainable, measurable outcomes in one of Rotary’s areas of focus. Grant sponsors form international partnerships that respond to real community needs and change lives.  The Club has a goal of raising $7,500.00 for the Global Water Project.  It is hoped that the funds can be collected within the next 60 days to allow the project development process to proceed.

The Huffington Post calls this one of the most exciting health stories of 2014.
We're Getting Closer To Defeating Polio For Good

There are three different types of Polio, a devastating, highly infectious
viral disease that can cause death and permanent paralysis. Type 2
poliovirus appears to have been gone since 1999, and the world has now gone
two years without encountering a case of Type 3 poliovirus, says Dr. Walter
Orenstein, Associate Director of Emory Vaccine Center and the
president-elect of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

"While that's still too short a time to be certain, it gives great
encouragement to the principle that two of the three polio types may be
eradicated," said Orenstein to HuffPost. Cases of Type 1 poliovirus are
mostly concentrated in countries like Pakistan, which had 276 cases this
year, and Afghanistan, which had 24 cases.

"We're marching closer and closer to polio eradication," said Orenstein.
Societies can prevent polio with widespread vaccination campaigns, and the
U.S. eradicated the disease in 1979.

Lima Rotary Club is a part of D6600 and Zone 29.

Here is Rotary International's annual report.
Not everyone is interested in annual reports.  If it was your performance review you most likely would be interested and if it was a report on your
investments you would likely pour over the results.
