LinkLima/Allen County is improving workforce development in our community.
Elizabeth Brown provided fellowship, and hosted a Veteran's Day Trivia Quiz. For each correct answer - she threw out Lindt Chocolate golden bears, which kept everyone interested. (The bear was delicious !)

Mark your calendars for the next Rotary Social Evening - December 9th location TBA...

There were 5 new Rotarians inducted today by our president, David Runk.

Pam Stricker - editor of the Lima News
George Diller - Nationwide Insurance
Linda Hamilton - West Ohio Food Bank
Matt Macklin - Plus Management
Jerod Lehman - YMCA

The club donated $898 to the Lima Humane Society - our furry friends thank you !!

Joe Patton introduced our speaker - Doug Arthur of LINK Lima - who spoke about next week's Makerfest event and workforce development in the next decade.

Lima is actually experiencing a shortage of qualified personnel in the professional areas. Medical support staff, middle management, and technical trades are all having trouble filling employment needs. The Makerfest job fair has been created to help build a strong worker pool for area business to draw from when needed. Getting candidates that are pre-qualified is the key to getting a rapid response...

The number one problem facing workforce development in the next decade is not lack of personnel - not lack of training - not foreign competition. Our biggest problem is a poor perception of Lima - both internal and external - and that is preventing us from moving forward. Makerfest was designed to show local area youth that there are good jobs in highly technical fields right here in Lima - and that they should consider staying in the area rather than moving away...

The Scoop - November 2, 2015
The JSMC has received grants to help with workforce retention and industry innovation.

It was a busy day for Rotary! After Paul Crow delivered a brief look at this date in history for Fellowship, Harold Bishchoff commended the 20 riders who participated in Cycle for Life on Saturday. Dave Cockerell reported on the successful Dictionary Distribution and thanked everyone who participated.

President David Runk presented Charlene Gilbert, Jody Sutherland and Andy Wannemacher with their blue badges before Dick Schroeder spoke about the importance of Every Rotarian Every Year and urged us all to participate in the Annual Fund. He then awarded Cliff Barber his +1 Pin. Congratulations and thank you Cliff!

Program chair Jeff Sprague introduced the day’s speakers, Cynthia Leis and Denny Glenn, who discussed the Office of Economic Adjustment Grant. The Grant was made available through the Ohio Federal Military Jobs Commission to communities affected by the downturn in federal contracts to help with workforce retention and industry innovation. During Phase 1 of the grant, led by Glenn, the Allen County Commissioners received $220,000 plus an additional $20,000 Regional Growth Partnership Grant. More than 315 community members participated in the Regional Asset Inventory and Readiness Analysis and created an Action Plan. Based on that Action Plan, the Commissioners received Phase 2 funding as well, totally $3.4 million over the next 24 months. Leis is responsible for implementing Phase 2, which will include 3 components: Local and Regional Collaborative Growth, the Ohio Energy Advanced Manufacturing Center Effort, and a Social Media/Communications Plan.

MESA Warehouse
MESA has settled into its new warehouse facility in Fostoria.
It was Thursday, October 30, 2014 that Medical Equipment & Supplies Abroad (MESA) was finally able to purchase a warehouse of their own.  The organization which was formed by District Governor Elect Bob Kuck II in conjunction with other District Rotarians in 1981, had until then been housed in a number of locations over the years from Finley to Waterville. In l989 Lima Rotarian Jack Goodnight became the MESA Chairman and served in that role until 2002

The Mission of MESA is to facilitate international service projects bringing equipment, technology and volunteerism to meet humanitarian needs throughout the world.  MESA fulfills it’s mission by collecting unused medical equipment, staging the equipment for shipment, helping District 6600 Rotary Clubs contact Host Rotary Clubs in countries of need to address one of the six identified areas of focus for Rotary International

• Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
• Disease prevention and treatment
• Water and sanitation
• Maternal and child health
• Basic education and literacy
• Economic and community development

Since moving into the Fostoria warehouse facility MESA has shipped four truck containers to areas of need.  The most recent containers were shipped to Jamaca, Belize, Nigeria and Honduras.  A map on the MESA website:  www.rotarymesa.org notes all the locations to which shipment of containers have been sent over the years.  The website also lists the specific medical equipment, personal patient equipment, disposables, household and educational items that MESA collects and ships around the world.

North Baltimore Rotarian Gary Davis, Director of Operations & Logistics for MESA notes that the Fostoria location is ideal as it is in the center of District 6600.  It is hoped that District Committee meetings could be held in the facility and the warehouse will allow for storage of records for District Governors.  The only addition that had to be installed in order to use the facility was the purchase of a mobile dock to allow the loading of the containers.  Gary noted that the 26,400 square foot facility has allowed MESA to accept additional and larger contributions from hospital systems.

The purchase of the warehouse was only possible due to a St. Marys Rotarian’s personal loan of $70,000.00 which will be repaid over time.  In fact, at the most recent MESA Board meeting it was noted that the loan is now down to $43,000.00.  The Lima Rotary has been one of the leaders in giving to MESA for many years and has not as yet contributed to the effort to retire this debt.  A Lima Rotary Foundation grant application will be submitted in the near future to help in this campaign.
