The Scoop - April 11, 2016
The Bureau of Workers Comp is cracking down on fraud.
Invocation was by Carol Buettner, with Sgt-at-Arms by  Jeff Utterbrink.

Fellowship was given by Andy Farley, who honored the Masters tournament by giving a brief Masters quiz. (We are relieved that he did not honor Jordan Spieth's performance by choking.)

Update on the Rotary Centennial Project - Abilities Field will officially open on May 12th at 11am - mark your calendars.

In the "Atta Boy" department - David Runk reported that the club raised over $6000 for Polio Plus this year !!

If you would like to march in the Memorial Day Parade - contact David Runk.

Our Golf outing is June 15th - be sure to sign up if you are able.

Our Member Spotlight was Michael Ayers, born in Eugene Oregon.

Michael lived in Norway for many years growing up, and in 1979 went on his first campout. He was hooked, and a lifetime of activity in the Boy Scouts followed. He is an Eagle Scout, his son is an Eagle Scout, and he is a Scout Master.

He graduated from LCC in 1984, and was in the US Navy Band. Went to OSU in Civil Engineering, which of course led to a career in photography. (College works that way, sometimes)

He was in NYC during 9/11 - was named International Photographer of the Year, and has created a unique market niche in making elaborate wedding albums.

Our speaker today was agent Shawn Fox, with the Ohio Bureau of Worker's Compensation. He investigates and builds cases of claimant fraud, which accounts for over 70% of cases. Fraudulent claims with the goal of attaining prescription opiates is at epidemic levels as well, and his department used videotape, internet searches, and plain old-fashioned shoe leather to do his job.

Mr. Fox (what a name for an investigator) outlined an especially heinous case of fraud, and the successful prosecution saved over one million dollars for the taxpayers of Ohio.

The Scoop - April 4, 2016
Doug Adams brought his guitar and shared some folk songs with us.
We had a great time at Rotary singing folk songs with Doug Adams. He led us through classics like "If I Had A Hammer," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," "Blowing in the Wind," and "This Land is Your Land." We even brought out kazoos for a fun rendition of I'm In Love With a Big Blue Frog. Doug gave us a brief history of each song and told us how they were statements about society. Dick Warren started the meeting by having us sing the 4 Way Test...rather badly...but with spirit.
Also, Lisa Hummel introduced us to the members of the new Rotaract Club at UNOH. They're hoping to sign 15 students up for the club, and they're looking for 2-3 Rotarians to help them out.
We welcomed new Lima Rotary board members Jeff Tracy, Susan Hubbell and Paul Swartz.
Jon Rockhold and Dave Cockerell received their Paul Harris +1 awards. And President David suggested that we volunteer for the Ottawa River Cleanup on April 23. Meet at the Red Cross Chapter House at 9:00am if you're interested.
Kirk Slusher was our member spotlight. Kirk went to work for ODOT fresh out of college and has been there for more than 30 years, working his way through the design department and planning department to Deputy Director of District 1, a post he's held for five years.

Board Highlights - April 12, 2016
Here are the highlights from the April 12th board meeting.
President David Runk called the meeting to order with the following members present: Harold Bischoff, Paul Crow, Peg Ehora and Tracie Sanchez and incoming Board Members Susan Hubbell and Paul Swartz.  Also attending was Secretary Rita Brown.  New Club Member George Diller also attended - working towards his blue badge.  Runk welcomed Newly Elected Directors Paul Swartz and Dr. Susan Hubbell and stated that their attendance was appreciated.

Attendance Report
Brown shared Attendance Information for March 2016.  Of the 178 club members, 44.43% attended meetings in March 2015.  The club has 15 new members and 18 resignations to-date for the fiscal year.  Five new members will be going through Orientation later this week and the club has one resignation in April 2016.

Annual Meeting Draft Agenda Update
The Annual Meeting will be held on Monday April 25, 2016.  The four-page document will be provided to the membership for their review.  The goal is to have the document available for the members to pick up at the club meeting on Monday 18th
Every Rotarian Every Year
Of 178 members club members all but 41 have contributed.  Runk plans to send letters to those not contributing with a goal of coming closer to the goal of $100 per member per year.  The club had budgeted $16,500 and is currently at $18,100 pledged.  Runk will continue to push through the end of the fiscal year.

            Presidential Citation
The Lima Club has qualified for the Presidential Citation!  Runk received an email from Rotary International last week indicating that the Lima Club achieved all requirements and will receive recognition at Gold level for achieving goals that strengthen Rotary and our club. Activities include growing the membership, developing sustainable service projects, giving to The Rotary Foundation, and building awareness of Rotary in the community.

Water Testing and the Ottawa River Cleanup –
Ottawa River Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday April 23rd and the Lima Rotary Club will participate on a small level.  The club has been asked by the International Yachting Organization to do water testing throughout the district.  For $30, we will receive five water testing kits. Those results will be sent to BGSU for testing.  Results will be provided to other organizations to help battle water problems such as currently being seen on/in Lake Erie.

Interact / Rotaract
The Interact Club at Bath is very active.  We are also near chartering a Rotaract Club at UNOH.

President-Elect Report
President-Elect David Frost was not present due to illness.
The Membership Sub-Committee met last week with members who currently hold red badges.  Runk indicated a lot of good suggestions came from the meeting.  One suggestion was to set aside two tables at the front of the room for members with Red Badges.  Other members would be encouraged to sit with them.  It would be a way for those new members to get to know more club members.  Another suggestion was to look into e:meetings where one could attend a meeting on-line as a makeup.  The group also discussed signing up for My Rotary and all the information available on-line.

International Chair
Sanchez discussed helping Bob Ruehl and Harold Bischoff with International Funding and Education.  A committee is being formed and a fund raising event is being discussed that will benefit International.  The goal is getting people involved who are interested in serving on the committee.

Finance
Treasurer Kevin Bill was not present
Finances are in good shape and bills are all caught up.
Collections – The collections report is looking much better.  The Finance Committee has been going through the list each month and making contacts by phone or email.  The Committee works with members to help them come up with a payment plan. The list is considerably smaller.  Each situation is taken on its own merit.  Guidelines and parameters are in place.  Calls and letters go out after a member is 90 days in arrears.  Communication has been the key.
A check is being sent to the Lima Rotary Foundation in the amount of $4,237.66 which remits for the 3/31 balance for Foundation and Scholarship contributions plus $175 in donations for the Drum Line.

MESA is conducting a clothing drive at the conference. All clothes are welcome for all weather conditions.  MESA's only request is that men's, women's and children's clothing be in separate garbage bags. Baby clothes would be fantastic.

The MESA Truck will be parked in the parking lot at the District Conference.

Anyone who brings their clothing donation to Rotary on the 17th or the 24th, please give it to me and I will make sure it gets to MESA.
Each container we ship has 2,500lbs of clothing with it to protect the medical equipment.

Rotaract
UNOH is forming a Rotaract Club!
I am very pleased to announce that we’re beginning to make significant progress in the development of a Lima Rotary Club sponsored Rotaract Club!  A meeting was held on Wednesday morning with Tim Fitzpatrick, the Dean of the College of Business and Danielle Oldham, the Director of International Student Services at the University of Northwestern Ohio.  These two will be the faculty advisors for the Rotaract Club being formed.  In addition, two students joined the meeting; Nina Nikolic is originally from Serbia and Xiomara Aguilar is from Columbia.

UNOH has already recruited 10 students and feel that they will have well over the 15 students needed within the next week to fulfill the requirements to establish the Club.  We let them talk about what they would like to see their Club do, some suggestions by these two International Students were:  Visit the elderly in Nursing Homes at Holidays and other times, Raise money for care packages that can be sent overseas, (toothpaste, soap, etc.)  Do a “color run” to raise money.  Collect school supplies for local and overseas students, Volunteer at the Humane Society, Provide student awareness and public awareness of problem children/students and adults face, and possibly do a “Malvina Farkle Day” (look it up on internet) in which the campus would shut down for a day and a major blitz would be done on community clean up or service projects.  They had some outstanding ideas and are eager to get started.  They will be reaching out to President David and Lisa Hummel within the next few weeks once they have their 15 students committed to the club to start the Charter process.

This is an exciting development for the Lima Rotary Club and I’m confident that the excitement will continue to build.

President David
