Stories
High school football coaches gave us a preview of the upcoming season.
Special Note: Ruby Tuesday is donating a portion of your meal bill to Cystic Fibrosis - through the end of August. If you have any questions - contact Mary Elmquist.

Jonalee Schmidt presented a check for $1241 to the Marimor Artability Program, held across the hall from our meeting place at the VMCC. The next time you walk by the Rottery table, remember that a few dollars from each member won't be missed, but will add up to real help for others...

Today's meeting was the annual Football Preview!!

We got an update on the county's school programs, and met their coaches and talked to the players.
(Note to Self: do not arrive late for these meetings, cause the football players cleaned out the lunch table. There was nothing left but cracker packets and cole slaw...)

The Lima Rotary Club surpasses $500,000 in scholarships!
The meeting began early today, as the Scholarship Committee had a grand
celebration planned.  Today was the largest class of scholarship recipients;
in addition, the Club surpassed the $500,000 mark in giving since its
inception in 2001.  It would have been under President Mike Schoenhoeffer's
term but for $75.  Esther not only will be recognized in infamy as president
for the centennial year, being the third female president but ALSO the
scholarships record.  In addition, we heard messages from three previous
recipients--Londell Smith, Haley Fickel, and Sherry Trees   Scholarship
committee members are Chair Bill Timmermeister, along with Rita Brown, Paul
Crow, Dave Hartman, Richard Warren and Kathy Williams---thank you for your
leadership and hard work in this tremendous endeavor for Allen County.

The program was from the West Central Ohio Healthcare Alliance, Katie Sarno
and Lisa Krieg, both of whom are RNs and wellness coordinators for area
businesses.  Workplace wellness programs are becoming extremely critical
with proven benefits in wellness for employees and reducing healthcare
costs.  In addition, American Heart Association awarded St. Rita's Medical
Center with the Fit Friendly Worksite Award for this year.  Tuttle
Construction was last year's recipient.    We also heard about Heartchase,
the American Heart Association's fund raiser from Lima.  Lima's event in
2013 was the national association's largest community fundraiser in the
country with $50,000 to the national level of the  Heart Association.
2014's event is on September 20.

Lima/Allen County has identified obesity (lack of physical activity and unhealthy lifestyle choices) as the major health risk impacting the health of our residents. These individuals also comprise the workforce for our local businesses and often impact their productivity and profitability. At the August 18 Rotary meeting, you heard about the importance of Worksite Wellness Initiatives. Because employees spend the majority of their waking hours at their place of work, the environment of the company has a large impact on their healthy lifestyle choices (smoking, physical activity, healthy food choices, etc.).

2014 marks the initial year of Lima/Allen County’s Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) to address obesity in our community, and we need to collect information about what wellness resources local employers currently have available. Even if you don’t currently have a Wellness Program, we need your input to develop our baseline data, and help determine our focus for the future and how we can best help our local businesses. We are asking that all surveys be completed by August 30, 2014, and thank you in advance for completing our survey. \

Gift basket items are needed for District Governor.
To all Lima Rotary Club members,

I wanted to take a moment to thank those who have contributed items for the gift basket to be given to Rex Engel, our District Governor, when he visits our club on September 22. There's still time to provide an item if you wish to do so.  Although we won't be meeting on September 1, there will still be two meetings prior to his visit.  Please bring any items you wish to contribute to one of those meetings.

Thank you for your service to our club!

David Runk
President-Elect 2014-15
