Workforce development is the key to attracting new businesses.
Father Ross led the club in singing America the Beautiful and then - Happy Birthday to Jeff Tracy - his 64th !!

- Allen County DARE program - $1,500 - Sheriff Crish

- Hope Visitation Center - $1000 - Linda Parish

- Lima Symphony Orchestra - $3000 - children's music programs - Elizabeth Brown

Historical Moment - Lima's first community service project was the establishment of the Boy Scouts - even hiring the first director.

(Rotary International's first project was installing a toilet in Chicago City Hall, a big deal in 1905)

Our speaker today was Eric Davis, from the Allen Economic Development Group. He outlined the groups analysis of data in not only attracting companies to the area, but keeping a diverse workforce for business to utilize.

The basic goal for economic development is to grow the economy faster than the population. Allen County will be facing a serious personnel  shortage in the coming years, as our current workforce retires, there will not be enough qualified employees to replace them. This challenge can be treated as an opportunity if we embrace it - attracting qualified candidates will take all of us working together to achieve.

Here are the highlights from the August 12 board meeting.
Lima Rotary Club
Board of Directors
August 12, 2014
Highlights
The Board has approved bringing guests during the month of August at no charge.  The ultimate goal is increasing membership.
Rotary Night on July 18th at the Lima Locos Game was successful as ten Rotarians attended with 11 children from the Community Summer Academy as their guests.
Esther shared the proposed Mentor Program, designed to improve memberships and involvement by quickly integrating new members into the club.  The red badge program will remain in effect and new members will wear the red badge until the mentor turns in a completed form to the Membership Chair indicating 8 of the 12 criteria covered in the program have been met.  At that time, a blue badge will be issued.  The program is expected to take no longer than 6 months.  She
will ask if Club Members are interested and, if so, offer training on mentor responsibilities.
Baldridge stated the first event of the Centennial Celebration will be this upcoming Monday August 18.  With the scholarship presentation on Monday, the program will have contributed over $500,000 in scholarships to the community since the inception of the program in May 2001.   In addition, a History Committee for the Centennial has been formed and is actively engaged in producing video, visual and written components of the club’s 100 year history.
Mike Schoenhofer stated he has been contacted by Dick Schroeder, Chairman of the Rotary International Every Rotarian Every Year Drive as Schroeder is getting some questions from Club Members regarding the use or inclusion of District Funds in the 100th Anniversary projects and proposed $100,000 program.  Schroeder has asked for information to share with the club to help promote the EREY drive
David Runk stated Art Brinkman and Jim Mason are chairing the Sergeant at Arms responsibility and have organized a process to ensure the tasks are completed appropriately.
John Ficorrili is Chairman of the Membership Committee.
Larry Webb is the Chairman for Fellowship and continues to contact additional Rotarians to do fellowship.
Chuck Wolfe from Family Promise is hoping to have Rotary become more involved in the programs offered by Family Promise.  He had offered to present a program to our club and is also doing one for the Kiwanis Club.

Bob Fett stated the International Service Committee is being formed.  The Mesa Committee will be in Findlay tomorrow for a Program.

The Board accepted a proposal for providing lunches for club meetings from Frank Guagenti from Milanos for a period of one year.  The cost will be $9.25 when the Tuscan Salad is served and $9 on the alternate weeks the Tuscan salad is not served.

Judge Warren stated a community member had requested the High Octane Drum Line participate at the Lima Live Event but her offer was declined.  He stated Rotary has limited involvement only for sponsorship and uniforms and encouraging students to consider participating.  The Lima Rotary Club does not control the activities of the High Octane drum line or advise the leaders on Drum Line activities.  Rotary involvement is covered in the Memorandum of Understanding dated July 31, 2013.  This topic is specifically addressed in the MOU in Item 9.  Warren has written a letter to Rotary Club President Esther Baldridge outlining her inquiry and the response of the Rotary Club.
The District Governor will be in Lima on September 22.  He will meet with Board at 10:45 a.m. at Civic Center before the club meeting.
New Member Applications were received from the following:
Annette Swisher – Wingate Hotel
Cynthia Scanland – Children’s Services
Tony Cox – Elida Schools Superintendent
Sheila Schmitt – Regional Transit Authority
Bischoff made a motion.  Frost seconded the motion.  Board approved.
Runk made a motion to accept with regret the resignation of Mark McKinley.  Decker seconded the motion.  Board approved.

The Broad discussed a request for painting the Rotary Pavilion in Faurot Park.  Frost will contact the City to determine the scope of work that needs to be done at this time and Decker stated she does a lot of work with the Unions in the area and she will contact them about doing the work as a Service Project with the Unions donating their time.
Treasurer Lawson presented the Financial Report as of July 31, 2014.   She stated income for July 2014 was $22,754 with Expenses in the amount of $21,478.  Net income was $1275 for the month.  The Board will continue to follow-up with members whose dues are in arrears as progress is being made in bringing accounts up-to-date.
Brown asked Lawson to provide a percentage of Rotarians currently contributing to the Scholarship fund by Monday August 18th for Bill Timmermeister, Scholarship Chairman.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
