The Scoop - August 22, 2016
Allen County's high school football coaches gave us a season preview.
If area football coaches had their way, they’d get weeks’ more practice, they told sports broadcaster Vince Koza Monday. But Friday night the season starts, so they’ll be ready.
Koza, a veteran Lima sports broadcaster who hosts a morning sports talk show on 93.1 The Fan, interviewed area coaches as part of a high school football preview Monday at Rotary.
Ten of the county’s 11 football programs participated (Allen East’s football team had a commitment at the Allen County Fair). The group includes five new head coaches looking to put their own stamp on a program.
One of those new coaches, Lima Senior’s Andre Griffin, said he was looking forward to a big rivalry game, hosting Middletown, to open the season Friday. Griffin is keeping much of former coach Mike Fell’s spread offense, but has added some power to it with a strong tight end.
Spartan Stadium will host a second emotional game Saturday night as Lima Central Catholic hosts Elida. Both coaches said they wanted their teams’ play to honor Jakob Sexton and Dew Duhlebohn, two Elida football players who died in a truck crash earlier this month.
Many of the teams in the county play in either the Western Buckeye League or the Northwest Conference, creating good rivalries and matchups that will determine playoff spots by the end of the season, coaches said.
Club President David Frost thanked Koza for hosting and organizing the program.
Also on Monday, Frost reminded members that Michael Ayers will be available before the meetings of Aug. 29 and Sept. 12 for new headshots.

The Scoop - August 15, 2016
Deputy Tibbs introduced us to active shooter training.
Homicides kill more people than fires at the workplace, but while we regularly practice fire drills, many people don’t even have a plan for an active shooter situation, Allen County Sheriff’s Deputy Damian Tibbs said Monday.
Tibbs, an ALICE trainer for the department, brought that sobering message to Rotary, and offered to bring in-depth trainings to members’ businesses and other organizations, such as schools or churches.
ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. Those aren’t linear in an active situation, Tibbs said. For example, while “Evacuate” comes last in the acronym, it’s actually the first thing you should do, if you can, in an active shooter situation.
“The reality is that there are no sanctuaries anymore,” Tibbs said, debunking myths such as a situation not happening in your community. “When you don’t have a plan you plan to fail … People carrying out these events don’t care whether they live or die. You can’t depend on mercy.”
ALICE gives the structure of a plan. Alert means to develop a means to alert people in an organization to a situation. Lockdown refers to what happens when it is not safe to leave. Inform means to give good descriptions of people and situations to first responders. Counter means to develop ways to fight back, as a last resort, with improvised weapons. Evacuate means thinking about a plan to leave any place, even your church or favorite restaurant, Tibbs said.
If you are interested in having Tibbs present to your business or organization, you can contact him at 567-233-1069 or tibbs@acso-oh.us.
Also Monday:
Steve Kayatin emptied pockets and filled the fine buckets by taking dollars from anyone not wearing their Rotary or Paul Harris pin. Fair warning for next time, he said.
The Lima Rotary Foundation awarded two grants, $2,000 for Allen County D.A.R.E. and $2,000 for High Octane Drumline. The foundation is applying to District 6600’s matching program for a third of the D.A.R.E. grant.

Centennial Wine
Order your centennial wine now!
It is difficult to believe but we are already on our third production of the 100 Year Celebration Rotary Red Table Wine.  Thanks to the generosity of Rotarians in all of Ohio and especially our own District 6600, we have already received contributions enough to donate $12,000 to the Rotary Foundation during this TRF Celebration year. As with our first two productions, the run is limited in number and is on a first donation, first confirm basis.   You, as a member of Rotary in District 6600 can order a case or more to use for special gifts, occasions, and even for the holidays.  Cases of wine will be delivered in September.

In addition, a new 100 Year Celebration White Wine is also being produced for a September delivery.  We have had many Rotarians ask about white wine. With the help of Firelands Winery in Sandusky Ohio, it is now an option.

YOUR contribution and request needs to be received as soon as possible as there may not be another wine production run offered prior to the end of this year.

Please join with fellow Rotarians in a contribution of $288 and in appreciation you will receive a case of either the 100 Year Rotary Celebration Red Table Wine or the first run of the Celebration White Wine. Delivery is included in the price for District 6600 Rotarians.  This is an extremely limited offer for our District members and whether you select white or red, each bottle has the commemorative label.  Please send your contribution in quickly by mail with the attached form and your payment. You can also find an order form and more details on the District 6600 website at   RotaryDistrict6600.org

Thank you in advance for your continued enthusiasm for this special 100 Year Rotary Foundation Celebration Wine.  All proceeds for the wine are given to The Rotary Foundation in the name of District 6600.

Yours in Rotary,

Do Nguyen
District Governor 6600
