The Scoop - March 28, 2015
Lima Rotary is working on a sewer project in Honduras.
3/28 - Invocation was by Bob Fett.

Michael Frueh provided fellowship, and he commented on the shortcomings of  a few political candidates. Judge Warren commented about sitting at the "bad boy" table, which some members thought would be a problem. The judge simply commented that he had been in contact with the criminal element for most of his career...

Our Member Spotlight today was the current publisher of the Lima News - Pamela Stricker. Her father was a pastor, and eventually a missionary, which took her to Japan for many years. She also grew up in Ft. Wayne, In and Kansas City, Mo - where she was the editor of the school yearbook. She attended the University of Missouri and majored in journalism - had 3 children, and then moved into advertising sales at the paper she was working at the time. This proved to be very successful for Pam, and she ran the sales departments for several Ohio papers over the years, ending up in Wilmington, Ohio publishing over a dozen publications.

Changing behaviors have made the newspaper industry much more challenging in recent years - but Pam is up to the challenge...

Our last Polio Plus Auction was gift certificates for Vino Bellissimo and Sara's cupcakes - which Michael Frueh purchased rather aggressively. Michael wanted to remind all Rotarians that beer is proof that God wants us all to be happy...

Our speaker today was our own Bob Ruehl - currently the district leader for international projects. He pointed out that our current project is very significant, and is a Rotary pilot project. Located in Honduras just 150 miles from Cancun - our village is in a mountainous region, where digging conventional latrines is difficult. Runoff from these hills contaminate groundwater, which causes many in these villages to get sick often. Bob is working on several solutions to this problem, which if proven effective will be used worldwide in similar areas. Good luck !!

Our Rottery drawing today was won by Dave Collins - congrats !!

The Scoop - March 21, 2016
The city and county are working to sell vacant properties through the Land Bank.
Invocation was by Bob Fett.

David Runk asked the club if we are interested in 2 study abroad teams this year, instead of our normal one. Due to demand, we could host a team from 2 separate continents in the same year. If you are interested in making this happen, please contact David and offer to help.

David also showed 2 videos to the club that showcased how our club makes a difference in the world. One project was helping a village with clean water - something our own club has worked on in some detail with Bob Ruehl in Honduras.

Mark your calendars for May 7th - our Spring Blood Clinic.

Peggy Ehora provided Fellowship, and focused on spring's first day. Her story about men going to the store over their lifetime was humorous and a bit too close to the mark. She also recognized the great efforts of the Spartans and the T-Birds in the state basketball tourney.

Our speaker was Peter White, City Land Officer, and Rachel Gilroy, Allen County Treasurer. They discussed how the Land Bank works, and discussed several paths to purchasing a property currently in the bank. This is important, as many homes are currently vacant in the county, and that means no tax revenue. The Land Bank's chief goal is to get a property sold before the property's physical condition deteriorates too much, so it can become a tax generating property once again, bringing much needed funds to the county. This problem is not isolated to just Lima - even large cities like Cleveland and Detroit has reclaimed numerous parcels - in some cases returning them to agricultural production.

District Conference
Lima Rotary will pay a portion of your registration for the District Conference.

Our Rotary District 6600 Conference registration is going on now.  If you are one of the over two hundred people who have already registered, thank you.  If you have been putting off registering, please act now.  Our space is limited, and is filling up rapidly.

Our next Conference will be held at beautiful Cherry Valley Lodge in Newark on April 29, 30, and May 1, 2016.  This is shaping up to be a great Conference at a great venue.  You will not want to miss District 6600’s first Conference at Cherry Valley.  It’s a short trip to enjoy the Lodge and the Granville/Newark area.  Columbus is only a 30 minute drive from Cherry Valley.

We have scheduled several great speakers including: Rotary International Director Jennifer Jones, Past Rotary International Director Mike McCullough, RI President’s Representative Past District 5240 Governor Joe Grebmeier, and others.  You will be inspired and learn what Rotary is doing in our District and around the world.

Registration is quick and easy.  Go to www.rotarydistrict6600.org/district-conference/ , and click on Register Now.  This one step registration includes the Conference, room, and all meals.

Many Rotarians have already taken the few easy steps and registered.  We thank you.  If you have been putting it off, take a moment now to complete your registration.

See you at Cherry Valley.

Best Wishes,
Gary
