The new Community Health Assessment shows that the health of Allen County residents is improving.
Allen County residents weigh less, exercise more, and drink less alcohol than they did five years ago, according to the Community Health Assessment which was unveiled at the Lima Rotary Club. Since the last survey in 2009, 70% of us say that we engage in some type of physical activity more than three times per week; we're eating more fruits and vegetables, and our cardiovascular health has improved. However, 22% of Allen County adults smoke, which has not changed from 2009. Among children in grades 6-12, obesity is up 4%, 21% of children have tried smoking, and 54% have drunk alcohol. Brittany Ward from the Hospital Council of Northwest Ohio, which conducted the survey, said the numbers to be concerned about among both adults and children is the level of depression and sadness - 11% of adults regularly feel depressed, while 29% of children feel sad or hopeless. Local health providers will be working on four priority areas as a result of the survey: Increase Wellness, Improve Maternal and Infant Health, Decrease Mental Health and Substance Abuse, and Increase Access to Care.
Also at the meeting, we welcomed two new members: Jodie Sutherland-Robinson from Yazel's Flowers, and Tom Holmes from Covenant Ministry.

Roy Baldridge gave us a brief info session on LACNIP - our Rotary recipient for the lottery this month. LACNIP works to strengthen local neighborhoods - through enrichment classes, National Night Out, and other events.

The last Rotary Foundation raffle was quite exciting - members fought for a limited edition bottle of scotch whiskey - Paul Yessenow ended up $500 poorer, but a bottle of memories richer...

Kevin Crouskup was our speaker - a hypnotherapist by trade. Long considered a carnival act - Kevin showed us how hypnosis has been used successfully to quit smoking, chronic pain, lose weight, control gambling and drug addictions, and even to just have a more positive outlook. There is now science to back up many of the claims - and the American Psychological Association is doing much research in this area. Kevin's company has helped many people in the area, and they attend national seminars and read trade publications in order to keep up with the latest developments...

Here are the highlights from the Board of Directors' meeting on April 14.
Publicity for the Centennial is continuing through April with the Rotary posters in a number of bus stop locations around the city.   Financial information has not yet been finalized as the collection of the final payment of the $100 assessment is still ongoing.  The committee was very responsible in keeping cost under control.  A final wrap-up should be provided next month.

President Baldridge advised the Board that the Annual Meeting will be held next week Monday April 20 during the regular club meeting.

The MOU regarding the Riverwalk maintenance is in the notes as it does not need to be voted on again.  It is for a 5 year commitment.   Introductory information will be included with the agenda and emailed to members plus handouts will be available at the meeting.

Service Awards will be presented to club members at the Annual Changing of the Guard Celebration.  The Board agreed to open the nomination process to the entire membership.  President Baldridge will send a request for nominations to the members.  The Board will make the final selection.

David Runk stated he has sent emails to the membership asking how they would like to be involved in the club and so far, 48 members have responded, either at club meetings or via email.  In addition, Runk requested suggestions for projects that club members would like to focus on in the upcoming Rotary Year.  He has several responses.  Suggestions include addressing the homeless in our country and considering the other requests made to the $100,000 committee.  Runk stated he would like to see the club become more hands-on vs. being just a check writing club.   If time allows after the business portion of the Annual Meeting, club members will be given time to have a Table Talk discussion on this topic.  Ehora suggested have the club participate in a community parade.  Labor Day was selected.  The Drum Line will be included.  Ehora will organize it.

David Frost stated the refurbishing of the Faurot Park Pavilion will begin on May 4th with the Painters Union doing the work.  It will be a 4 – 5 day project.  They don’t want volunteers from the Rotary Club but we bring doughnuts and coffee each morning.   Also the Faurot Park Pavilion will be the site for the Annual Changing of the Guard Party in June 2015 – weather permitting.  It will be a noon event.

The Blood Clinic will be held on Saturday May 2nd

Bischoff stated fund raising for the Global Water Project is almost complete.  Lima will be the Lead Club with the host club being in Honduras.  Bob Ruehl is finalizing it.  Rotary International funds will be requested as well as District generated funds.

The Board approved applications for membership from the following:
·         Andrew Wannemacher
·         Tim Sielschott
·         Amy Rode – Husky
The Board accepted the following resignation with regret.
·         Jessika Phillips

There being no further business, Schoenhofer made a motion to adjourn.  Fett seconded the motion. Board approved.

Respectfully submitted
Rita Brown, Secretary.

The Villa Peniel sewer project that the Lima Rotary Club is helping to fund is nearing completion.
The last of the materials for the Villa Peniel sewer system have been delivered to the community and to each house. One of the local TV news network went to cover the story for their "Good News Segment" on how Rotary helps communities. The last part isthe connection to the city's general system, for which permission is needed from the Mayor's office.
A ceremony is planned with the Sanaa and the City mayor for the finalization of the project and at the same time there will be a deworming brigade for the whole community.

Enjoy these paraprosdokians!

Paraprosdokians (Winston Churchill loved them) are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected;

frequently humorous.

  1. Where there's a will, I want to be in it.

  2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on my list.

  3. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

  4. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

  5. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.
