An Open Letter To The Rotary Club Membership
Ladies and gentlemen of the Rotary Club of Lima, Ohio,

I wanted to make you aware that the Rotary Board is re-examining the payment of dues by the members of our club and that steps are being taken to address a long-standing issue – believe it or not, some members are quite in arrears in the payment of their dues.  Our constitution states that quarterly dues are to be paid IN ADVANCE.  So, while the review of policy is being done, I want to urge everyone to please check the status of his or her account – are you caught up?  If not, please contact Kevin Bill at Rea and Associates to make plans for bringing your account current.

Please also keep in mind that while the “Scholarship Fund” and “Every Rotarian Every Year” portions of the quarterly invoice are voluntary, they are very important for the funding of vital programs.  I urge you to continue contributing to these programs as well.

More on this important area in the life of our organization will be addressed over the next several weeks.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Be a Gift to the World!

David

St. Rita's is using technology to keep people healthier.
Providing higher quality care with better service is the goal of St. Rita's Medical Center. CEO Bob Baxter told us that they are investing in keeping people healthy with such things as robotic surgery, 3-D mammography, and MyChart which is an online reference of patients' diagnoses, test, medications, test results and more. Looking to the future, St. Rita's hopes to expand onsite hospice and respite care and institute hybrid operating rooms where patients can undergo multiple procedures in one operating room.

Also at Monday's meeting, we handed out scholarships to more than a dozen deserving students, bringing the total number of scholarships awarded by the Lima Rotary Club to 810 since 2001.
There was also a shelter box set up so we could walk into the tent and see all the provisions provided for families left homeless by disasters.
Mike Schoenhofer reviewed the photo directory on our web site and encouraged everyone to update their photos and other information.

Jury duty is everyone's civic responsibility.
Roy Baldridge led the club in the invocation, with Butch Kirk providing fellowship.

Our speaker today was Judge Jeff Reed, with the topic of jury duty.

Everyone hates to get that letter in the mail telling them of an upcoming jury duty appointment - but it is vital to our judicial system that everyone participate. Judge Reed shared many "colorful" responses to jury questionnaires - perhaps some of them were intentionally designed to excuse them from duty. Jeff also outlined the process of jury selection - challenges, and final jury seating. He also showed us how today's juries are more protected than in the past on publicizing jury members - when angry crowds would often show up at a juror's house after the trial. If you receive a notice for jury duty, there are many accepted excuses to be released from duty - but if you are eligible, you should serve. It's important to remember that you may need a jury yourself someday...

Here are the highlights from the August 11 board meeting...
President David Runk called the meeting to order at 11:30 AM with the following Board members present:  Harold Bischoff, Paul Crow, Anne Decker, Peggy Ehora, David Frost, and Tracie Sanchez.  Also Secretary Rita Brown and Treasurer Mark McKinley were present.

Rita shared the monthly attendance report for July 2015.  The month ended with 180 members and with two new members:  Joy Reichenbach from Lima Convalescent Home and Ty Lotz from Dominion.  Three members left the club:  Ram Pai, Tom Cornell and Brian Bacon.  Attendance was down a little but we appear to be on a close match to last year’s activity.

David Runk asked the board for their level of interest in having an exchange student with the Club for the 2016 – 2017 year. Application needs to be made to Rotary International by September 2015.  All members of the Board expressed interest.  The Board approved applying for a sponsorship.   David indicated he is speaking with LCC, Shawnee and Lima Senior about the possibility of starting High School Interact programs.  He also discussed working with the local universities regarding starting a Rotaract Program at the college level.

The Rotary Lake Erie Watershed Crisis Conference will be held Friday and Saturday October 23 and 24, 2015 at The Grand Plaza Hotel in Toledo, OH as algae is again causing problems on Lake Erie.  Water purification is one of Rotary’s priorities in the world.  Flyers outlining the conference are available at club meetings.   Also information is available at www.rotarylakeerieconference.com

David Frost shared a Past Due Policy taken from the Rotary International Constitution.  The policy will be amended to fit the needs of the Lima Club.  The Board discussed developing a designated process with an installment pay plan to cover the past due amount.  Current dues will need to be kept up-to-date.  The delinquent member will be asked to sign a one- page contract.   The focus will be on members who are delinquent 120 days plus.  Runk will share details through an announcement from the podium and Anne will include an article in the eSpoke.
In the future, about 15 minutes before the meeting, the Rottery Committee will announce a drawing will be held that day.  Charities designated for receipt of winnings will also make a brief announcement to the club about their organization at the beginning of the quarter.

Tracie Sanchez gave a report on the following Service Projects:

Dave Cockerell is working on the Dictionary Distribution plan.  There will be some changes to the distribution. The hope is to make this a county-wide one – two day event this fall.  The club will need Nine Hundred Sixty (960) Dictionaries at $2.50 each for a total cost of $2,400. Runk asked Frost to apply for a District Grant to cover a portion of this cost.

To-date over $213,000 has been raised for the Abilities Field - which is over the one-half way point.  A video for the website has just been released. Conversations are underway regarding applying for a grant from District 6600. Proposals need to be in by August 20th.  There may also be State of OH grant monies available.

The Fall Blood Clinic will be held on Saturday November 7th.  Seven volunteers will be needed.  We will be sending out an email asking for volunteers.

Plans for the Christmas Auction are underway.  Jay Begg and committee are working on setting the date and making whatever improvements should be made.  The event may not be an evening event but rather on a Monday during a regular club meeting.  More details will follow.

Peggy Ehora will chair a new Social Committee being formed.   The club discussed participating in the Labor Day Parade.  Peggy, Tracie and Anne will organize it.  The Board discussed having the Drum Line walk in front of the Lima Rotary Club Float.

Harold Bischoff reported on the Villa Peniel project.  Installation is complete and the sewer system has been successfully hooked-up.  The project was completed for several thousands of dollars less than been projected.  Those funds be used for other necessary projects in the area.  The requests will need to be approved and bills will be validated to ensure there is no overspend.

Josh Unterbrink, of Activate Allen County is working with the International Committee on a riding event in late October at the Lima Mall.  Other organizations will be asked to get involved in order to make it competitive - Rotary against Kiwanis for example.    There will be no cost to any person to participate in the event at the Mall.  It will focus on Public Awareness.

The Board approved a New Member Application for George Diller.   The Board accepted the resignations of Susan Mann and Greta Murray with regret.

Mark McKinley shared the Financial Report with the Board. He stated Total Assets are over $135,000.  Future monthly reports will include the Balance Sheet.  He indicated the Pay Plan being discussed for members who are delinquent in payment can be supported by Rea and Associates with electronic invoices being generated per the terms of the plan.  Rea will share samples of types of documents currently being used.

The next Board Meeting will be Tuesday September 8th.  The Board adjourned at 1:15 PM

Respectfully submitted

Rita Brown,
Club Secretary.

Please attend the Lake Erie Watershed Crisis Conference October 23 & 24!
As District Governor, I am writing to ask for your help in reaching out to the members of your club.
Following the Lake Erie toxic algae/water crisis last summer, which rendered the water in Toledo’s regional water system "undrinkable” for nearly three days, Toledo Rotary was urged by Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, Toledo, to make a difference bringing forward the issue of safe drinking water in Lake Erie.  This same condition threatens the waters of Green Bay, WI, Saginaw Bay, MI and other waters in the Great Lakes which touch US and Canadian shores.
Contamination and invasive species are threatening the water quality of the Great Lakes putting local businesses and public health at risk.  With the exception of the polar ice caps, the Great Lakes system is the largest source of freshwater in the world.  This issue of toxic algal blooms is repeated in many other places around the world often impacting drinking water sources. Globally, the United Nations estimates that 783 million people worldwide still do not have access to improved drinking water.
With the support, participation and assistance of Rotary International and Rotary Clubs surrounding the Great Lakes watershed in the U.S. and Canada, the Rotary Club of Toledo and our District 6600 is taking up the challenge to create a model call to action.  A dynamic 2-day conference, the Rotary Lake Erie Watershed Crisis Conference is scheduled for October 23 & 24, 2015www.rotarylakeerieconference.org
Imagine this Conference as a mirror image of the very first meeting Rotarians held about eradicating polio from the face of the earth.  Imagine the sense of accomplishment now for those people who attended and planned the first discussions knowing that today we are "this close”.   If we can successfully tackle this clean water issue, imagine the sense of accomplishment in the years that lie ahead, as Rotary brings business leaders and experts together today to provide clean water solutions for tomorrow.
Clean water and especially drinking water has long been a priority for Rotary International resulting in this conference being supported at the highest levels within Rotary International.   Rotary International General Secretary, John Hewko will serve as a keynote speaker along with other distinguished, invited guests. Attendees of this conference will not only be informed, but will leave with specific actions and new  opportunities to take back to their home clubs and actively participate in making change happen in Lake Erie as a result of the Conference.
§ Purpose of Conference: To inform attendees of the issue of Lake Erie and the Great Lakes toxic algae and establish a course of action
§  The Unique Rotary approach: Rotarians work together throughout the world regardless of socio- economic, political or religious barriers.  Our question will be "What obstacles are threatening our drinking water, and what can we, as Rotarians, do to help?”
§  Invitees:  Will include government officials from throughout the US and Canada, academicians and researchers who will help attendees understand the problem and potential solutions.  We’ll hear from the agricultural community, those offering products and services which address protecting our drinking water, the environmental community and Rotarians from all around Lake Erie and other locations where drinking water has been impacted.
As a fellow Rotarian, I’m asking you to help spread the word by taking the following steps:
§  Please forward this email and the attached ‘Save-the-Date’ to all club members, encouraging them to to attend this vital conference.
§  Please "Save the Date” – starting at noon Friday, October 23rd through the closing dinner on Saturday, October 24th and plan on joining your fellow Rotarians and invited guests.
On-line conference registration opens in late summer at www.rotarylakeerieconference.org
We look forward to seeing you there.
Yours in Rotary Service,

District Governor Gary Newton

The Lima Rotary Club is considering hosting an exchange student next year.
Ladies and gentlemen,

At our last Rotary Board meeting, the board voted to investigate and fund the Rotary Youth Exchange program for the 2016-17 school year.  This is an exciting development as it ties in with our effort to not only support the Bath Interact Club, but also the desire to form additional Interact Clubs at other schools represented within our club.  As you know, we’re also exploring the creation of a Rotaract Club on at least one of the local college campuses.

The Club’s investment in supporting a possible In-Bound student is expected to be $2,000 or less for the entire school year.  But, over the next few months at least one host home needs to be identified and two (or three) would be even better.  The host home does not need to be a Rotarian family.  If you, your family or someone you know would be interested in participating in this exciting program, please let me know.

The Out-Bound program is also a possibility and our club’s investment for this portion of the Youth Exchange program would actually be almost nothing!  (We might want to contribute something such as a “scholarship” for the student planning to go abroad.)

So, please consider this excellent opportunity for your family or perhaps talk to others within the community who would enjoy this type of cultural exchange.

Following is an email from the District Youth ‘Exchange Chair which may provide some additional illumination.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.
