Mystery Monday was another fun day.
With Monday’s meeting reserved for the new effort “Mystery Monday,” club members relaxed a bit and had some fun with bingo games and prizes.
Club member Ralph Ellis remained confused about just how to score a bingo, while others who actually scored bingos took home some nice donated prizes.
The Mystery Monday Committee plans another event this fall.
Also Monday:
Rotary will have a social opportunity, a family bowling event Aug. 6 at Westgate Entertainment.
President David Frost announced that Anne Decker revamped the club’s website; that our Monday meetings for Aug. 1 and 8 will be in City Club, because of schedule issues.

District Governor Do Nguyen shared a powerful example of his own life for service.
District Governor Do Nguyen is using the powerful example of his own life to tell Rotarians they can make a difference in the world.
Nguyen, 2016-2017 governor for Rotary District 6600, introduced himself to the Lima Rotary Club Monday. A Rotary member in Maumee since 1995, Nguyen is a 2013 winner of the Rotary Service Above Self Award. He has participated in multiple mission trips, especially in Guatemala and visited his native Vietnam in a Rotary-sponsored fact-finding trip. He also helped establish the Dove Fund, a nonprofit that builds schools and provides scholarships and microenterprise business support in Vietnam.
“I had declined invitations to join Rotary five times before I joined in 1995,” Nguyen said. “Now I realize it was a great gift that changed and enriched my life.”
Nguyen told the club his father died before he was born, and his mother’s example of care, love and doing good for others was the first gift in his life, he said. He came to the United States to study at Bowling Green State University and could not return home after the fall of Saigon. Several years later, his wife and daughter joined him, and they made their home in Ohio.
During his first mission trip to Guatemala, he was hooked on international service.
“I saw myself in those children,” he said.
Nguyen wants to see District 6600 (and its local and international service projects) represented well at the international Rotary conference, held this year in Atlanta. He also wants to push Rotary’s values down to the region’s youth, to high school and even junior high and elementary students, using the Four-Way Test as a vehicle. Lima Rotary Club Past President Esther Baldridge is helping initiate a Four-Way Test essay contest, and board member Jill Ackerman is helping initiate a speech contest.
Rotary will soon win the battle to eradicate Polio in the world, Nguyen said.
“We will stay on the battlefield until the last case is a distant memory,” he said.
Also Monday:
Tim Fitzpatrick brought nine members from the UNOH Rotaract Club to the meeting. The club received its official charter Monday.
President Dave Frost reported a good effort from the social event at Rally in the Square, saying about 15 Rotarians helped with the event. The next social opportunity is Aug. 6, a family bowling night at Westgate Entertainment Center.
Frost announced the spring Blood Clinic raised $11,322 for the Rotary Foundation.
Jonalee Schmidt presented a Rottery check for $1,315 to the Honduran water and sanitary project. This quarter’s Rottery will benefit Ottawa River Coaltion.

     District Governor Message & Remarks
Do Nguyen began by mentioning this is the 100th Anniversary of the Rotary Foundation.  The DG greeted the Boards by complimenting the club on its dynamic new President and also on how much the Lima Foundation has done in the Community and the World.  The Global Grant request in the amount of $200,000 has just been submitted to Rotary International by Bob Ruehl.
The DG commented on the following:
•    Esther Baldridge is outlining the 4-way Essay Contest for the District.  It will be rolled out this fall with the school year.  The Lima Club will be active in the 4-way Speech Test this year and the new 4-way Essay contest.
•    The Lima Club has no in-bound and out-bound students.  It has been a number of years since the club had in-bound students.  The club needs to begin planning for next year. Host families from outside the club are also acceptable.
•    Nguyen stated it is expensive to send student outside of US but if done through Rotary, the cost is much less.
•    STRIVE program - The Lima Club has never been involved in STRIVE.  The Lima Club will work toward it.
•     District Training will be held on Aug 20th regarding the global brand.  Frost indicated he and Anne Decker will meet to discuss redesigning the web site – re the global brand.
•    Nguyen discussed his plan for Foundation giving - If District club members give $1.00 a day for 100 days starting 7/4/2016, by the time of the Foundation’s 100th Anniversary Celebration on October 12, 2016, the $100 for EREY will be donated.
•    The District Conference will be held May 19 – 21, 2017.  It will feature projects from the club including the Global Water Project in Honduras.
•    The RI President is from the US and The Rotary International conference will be held next in Atlanta GA.   It will be a special year to celebrate along with the 100th anniversary of the Foundation.    Nguyen stated he plans to have 200 attend from the District and hopes to attract more to attend.  Currently Frost and Sanchez are planning to attend from the Lima Club.
•    The Water Conference will be held October 28, 2016.  Jay Begg and Tracie Sanchez attended last year.
•    Nguyen stated the Secretary General of RI is asking us to support the October 23, 2016 event in Cleveland – celebrating 100 years of the Foundation and Founder Arch Klumpf.  Nguyen encouraged board members to buy tickets for the symphony performance and the dinner.
•    Nguyen stated these are the last days of Polio on earth.  Runk asked what he sees as the Next Big Thing after polio is eradicated.  Nguyen indicated there are six areas of focus but he sees Water as #1 and Peace as #2.
Nguyen asked the Board the following:
•    Are we pleased with District Performance for the club?   He encouraged the Board to be active and to attend district events.
•    Global grant – if District has global grants would we be able to support additional grants from other districts.
o    Lewellen responded that most requests from the Foundation are local and we try to focus on local needs.  Recently a large amount was awarded to Bob Ruehl to pay down the Mortgage on the Rotary Warehouse.
•    If the Club chooses a local project to feature at the District Conference, which would it be?
o    Runk stated he would favor the Abilities Field which will serve a 6-county area.
•    District 6600 will also have a booth at RI Convention that will feature our International projects.
Jeff Tracy indicated as Membership is declining, what do we need to tap into to strengthen membership?
Nguyen stated the Council on Legislations has approved the following concepts on membership:
•    Care about service more than attendance.
•    Have flexible meetings that allow more young Rotarians who don’t have time to attend regular club meetings.  They don’t have to attend but work on committees.
•    Have service projects meetings at night.
•    Do we have our Mayor as a member of Club?
Restriction has changed and elected officials and government officials are now invited to join.  They affect committees – Young professionals – allow flexibility to attend – long overdue.
•    Attend Membership Training Aug 20.
As DG Nguyen was finished with his information sharing with the Boards, Frost thanked him for attending and adjourned the meeting.
Respectfully submitted
Rita Brown, Secretary
