Lima Rotary learns the meaning of the lyrics to "American Pie."
Those who attended Monday's Rotary meeting will never hear the song "American Pie" the same way again. Retired ONU Professor and Allen County Museum Director Ray Schuck edited a book of essays about the meaning of the song's lyrics and its impact on our society and he took us through the lyrics verse by verse explaining that songwriter Don McLean wrote the song about the end of 50s rock & roll, the death of Buddy Holly, and the changes both music and our society experienced in the 60s. Ray wrapped up his presentation with a singalong to the last chorus of the song.
Also at Monday's meeting, Elizabeth Brown-Ellis thanked the club for contributing to the Lima Symphony Orchestra and showed a video of children who enjoyed the symphony performance our club sponsored. We also enjoyed a few minutes of networking between the business portion of the meeting and the speaker.

Interfaith roundtable discussion shows similarities between religions.
In a fascinating discussion of four different faiths, local religious leaders told Lima Rotarians that they share many similarities. The panelists were Connie Levy Hornung, president of Temple Beth Israel-Shaare Zedek, Pastor Paula Snyder Belousek of Salem Mennonite Church, Dr. Syed Zaheer Hasan, with the United Muslims Association of Toledo, and Carla Thompson, vice-president of Lima’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Maha Zahery hosted the program. They talked about tracing their roots back to Abraham, but diverged over the years as they adopted different beliefs. As they addressed misconceptions about their faiths, Hasan encouraged more community forums like this one so people have a better understanding of the true beliefs of the different religions.
Also at Monday's meeting, Mike Schoenhofer shared the story of how he met his wife...when he was a Catholic priest. "That's something not really encouraged by the church!" said Mike.

Dictionary Distribution
Dictionary Distribution is November 14.

On Wednesday November 14 Lima Rotarians will be in the classrooms as we will continue the tradition of distributing dictionaries to the third grade students in Lima and Allen County. This Lima Rotary project has been a long time tradition and fun event for Lima Rotarians for many years. Lima Rotary members give a brief overview of the the Lima Rotary Club and then pass out a dictionary and pencil to each student in a classroom setting. This is a great event and Rotary volunteers will be needed. Please let Dave Cockerell know if you would like to participate.

Polio Plus
The Lima Rotary Club is helping to end polio.
The Lima Rotary Club is taking pledges for Polio Plus.  You can either donate at Monday's meeting, or download the pledge card you can find here and mail your donation. If the entire Lima Rotary Club can meet or exceed last year’s World Polio Day total of $4,473.00, Paul Swartz will contribute an additional $500.00. Don't forget that for every dollar we contribute, the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation will contribute $2, tripling our pledge.

Giving Tuesday
Please support the Rotary Foundation on Giving Tuesday.

You can end Foundation Month on a charitable note by participating in Giving Tuesday, 27 November. Rotary will be joining thousands of other organizations worldwide for a global day of giving. Our new online giving platform has made it easier than ever to give to the Foundation, and you can easily notify someone of a gift made in their honor via email or by printing and delivering a customized notification yourself.

We usually refer to The Rotary Foundation as Our Foundation. Unlike most charities, our Foundation is truly Our Foundation, because it is both supported by the Rotary family, and supports the work we do. This year, our Foundation has already approved 222 district grants, with $31.9 million USD in total funding, and 41 global grants, with $11.9 million in total funding.

Our ambitious goals to grow our endowment and our annual giving set the stage for a larger, more effective, more sustainable Rotary—that will Be the Inspiration for generations to come.
