The Scoop - March 22, 2021
DriveOhio is getting Ohio ready for smart mobility.
"There are four revolutions happening right now in the transportation space," says DriveOhio Executive Director Howard Wood. "Automated vehicle technology, connected public infrastructure, electric propulsion of our vehicles and shared mobility. And that's interestingly both on the ground with cars and we're seeing it on the air side as well with drones of course, but there's other advanced air mobility that's really changing the face of transportation today, so that's why we exist." Ohio is home to dozens of public and private entities all involved in the design, development, testing, use and regulation of autonomous and connected technologies. DriveOhio, the state’s new center for smart mobility, brings all of these organizations together under one umbrella, serving as the hub for all things autonomous and connected in Ohio. Howard told us that Route 33 is being developed as a Smart Mobility Corridor between East Liberty and Dublin to test autonomous and connected vehicles. The Ohio Department of Transportation and local governments are equipping the road with high-capacity fiber-optic cable and roadside sensors that will instantaneously link researchers and traffic monitors with data generated from communication units installed in vehicles and wireless sensors along the roadway. This testing could lead to driverless vehicles in the future. DriveOhio Communications Director Luke Stedke told us that smart mobility has everyday uses that could make it easier to get around Lima by telling us when trains will be coming through the area and if they will be blocking roads. Howard told us that many other projects are in development around the state ranging from workforce mobility, healthcare and education access, and mobility access for underserved, elderly and disabled populations. Project plans are being developed utilizing potential technology-enabled solutions ranging from autonomous shuttles, autonomous and connected vehicle testing, connected infrastructure and other smart mobility endeavors.

Golf Outing
Register now for the Rex Perry Memorial Golf Outing on July 21 and support our scholarship fund!
This year marks the 21st anniversary of the annual Rex Perry Memorial Golf Outing. It will be held on Wednesday, July 21st at Hidden Creek Golf Course with a rain date of Wednesday, August 25th. The Golf Committee is working closely with Hidden Creek Golf Course to again ensure our participants' safety against COVID.
Last year we had 27 teams competing and raised over $40,000, all of which went to benefit the Rotary Foundation Scholarship Fund. The Rotary Memorial Scholarship Fund selects persons who live or work in Allen County who are in pursuit of a degree or certification and will attend a school or college in Allen County. The intent of the scholarship is to encourage Allen County employees and residents to work and plan for their futures within our county. As of March 2021, over 1,089 adults wishing to continue their education have received scholarships from the Lima Rotary Club. These scholarships total over $817,250. Degrees or certifications can be achieved at the Apollo Career Center (Adult Education), Bluffton University, Rhodes State College, The Ohio State University at Lima and the University of Northwestern Ohio. All residents who live in and employees who work in Allen County are eligible.
The golf outing is open to the public so please invite your friends to join us. Contact Andy Wannemacher today to register or click here to register online.

Nigerian Rotaractors support health clinics
Rotaract members in Nigeria jumped into action when they learned that health clinics for the poor in Port Harcourt lacked some of the essential supplies to stop the spread of COVID-19. The Rotaract clubs, in partnership with Rotary members, visited the clinics and provided COVID protocols as well as needed cleaning supplies. They also met with clinic staff who deliver prenatal care to pregnant women from the rural surroundings to make sure they understood the protocols and had supplies to stay safe. Read their blog post and share your efforts on Rotary Showcase.
