The Scoop - January 16, 2017
Co-author shares life of pioneering Ohio State coach.
The man, and the story of his American journey, is surely a great example of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work, author Steve Davis said Monday.
Bill Myles, a legendary assistant coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes, is a pioneer in many ways, said Davis, who co-authored Myles’ autobiography. Davis, of Pandora, is a water resource specialist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. But as a 1973 Ohio State graduate, he came to know Myles, and helped him write the book, “Myles Traveled – Stories of My American Journey.”
“It is fitting that we do this today, to celebrate the history that made this possible,” Davis said of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Myles is the grandson of a slave, and grew up in segregated Kansas City, Missouri. On his wedding night, he took his bride across the border to Kansas, because there was no hotel for them in Kansas City. At the start of his coaching career, he took a football team that hadn’t won a game in 18 years to the city championship. And then it was off to college, where he would coach under greats at the University of Nebraska and The Ohio State University.
The book, and Myles’ telling of his life, is often described to Davis as a model of how to live. He learned those lessons early, Davis said, from legends such as Jackie Robinson. Greats from the Negro League, boxing, jazz stayed in homes in his family’s neighborhood because of the segregation, and he got to know them as they passed through town.
“Bill saw them up close and wanted to be like them,” Davis said.
Davis shared some of Myles’ stories about coaching for Tom Osborne at Nebraska and Woody Hayes at Ohio State, and many more are in the book. He is retired and lives in Worthington with his family.
In other Rotary business Monday:
Lima Rotary Club and Paul Swartz received an award from District Governor Do Nguyen for work on the Polio Plus campaign. Swartz reminded the club that this year’s goal is $12,000, to be raised through pledges, auctions, Rottery, and other means.
Carl Berger reminded the club about Rotary’s American Red Cross Blood Drive Feb. 13.
Tickets remain, but are selling fast, for the club’s first Reverse Raffle, to benefit unsecured funds for the Lima Rotary Foundation. Tickets are $100 and only 200 will be sold, with a chance at part of a purse that totals $6,000. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Civic Center. Additional dinner tickets are $25.

Board Highlights - January 10, 2017
Here are the highlights from the January 10th board meeting.
President Dave Frost called the Meeting to Order with the following members present:  Jill Ackerman, Paul Crow,  Anne Decker, Susan Hubbell, David Runk, Tracie Sanchez, and Jeff Tracey.  Also Treasurer Kevin Bill and Secretary Rita Brown.  Guests Catheryn Sarno and Jacque Daley-Perrin were also present.

     Attendance Report
Rita Brown shared the Club Attendance report for December 2016 which showed 45.97% attendance during the month.  The year ended with 168 members with 7 new members and 10 resignations.  We currently have three new applications and plans to bring more members into the club.

Joint Board Meeting Date February 14, 2017
Frost indicated for the past several years, the Rotary Board and the Foundation Board have been holding a joint meeting in February.  The meeting will be held Tues February 14, 2017. Previous topics have included Financial Reports and preliminary discussion of the Annual Meeting.

     President’s Report               Dave Frost
     Red Cross Blood Drive
The Rotary Red Cross Blood Drive is scheduled for Monday February 13, 2017.  Red Cross Executive Director Derek Stemen and President Frost are working on the event together.  Three Rotarians who are actively involved with Red Cross will address the club.   Carl Berger will be the first speaker.  Sign-up sheets will move around the room.  The Red Cross has a goal of signing 80 donors. Frost hopes to sign 100 donors.  Mass emails will be sent to Club Members over the next couple of weeks with details.  Anyone wishing to donate blood may do so now by making an appointment with the Red Cross and indicating it is being donated as part of the Rotary Club Blood Drive.   The Club will be given credit for it.

     D6600 Grant Management Seminar
The District Seminar will be held on February 25, 2017, in Findlay.  In order to be eligible to apply for a grant, a member of the club must attend the seminar.   Frost indicated after attending last year, he met with the Foundation and discussed the importance of the Lima Club’s utilizing the district funds as a piggy back and lean-on with our grants.  Runk agreed to attend this year and to speak with the Foundation to encourage a member of the Foundation to attend with him.  The grant application process has time sensitive dates and attending the seminar is a good use of our time to ensure we are in compliance.

     President Elect Report           Tracie Sanchez
The date for the Reverse Raffle is set for February 18, 2017 at the VMCCC.  Doors will open at 5:30 with appetizers and cash bar.  To start the evening, there will be a complimentary bottle of red and white wine at every table.  Buffet dinner, catered by Lock Sixteen, will start at 6:30, and will include prime rib, chicken breast, sides and dessert.  The raffle will begin immediately following dinner.  Total purse for the evening is $6,000.  Tickets are $100 for the meal and for a chance to win the $1,500 grand prize.  The cost of the meal for guests of ticket holders is $25 but that amount does not include a chance to win the big money.  They are eligible to participate in the side games including bingo, and a Chinese auction with great prize packages, two side boards worth $1,000 each and a 50/50 drawing.  Proceeds will go to the Lima Rotary Foundation to use for new projects Rotary hopes to help fund in the Lima Community.  The raffle is open to the public and members are encouraged to invite friends, relatives and business colleagues for a fun night.  Over the next month, we will have monthly announcements and tickets will be sold on a first come first served basis.  Only 200 tickets are available.  The Board discussed another option of paying $10 at the door to come in and participate in the games.  Members can pick their ticket number if still available.  Jeff Tracy will be the emcee for the evening.  It is not necessary to attend to win!

     Golf Outing 2017
Sanchez indicated we are looking for a Chair and Co-Chair for the upcoming 2017 Rex Perry Golf Outing.  After years of service, Matt Otto may want to step down as chair.  It is time to begin contacting sponsors and making decisions about give-aways.  The event is typically in June – no date has been set at this time.

     Vice Presidents Report          Paul Swartz
     Polio Plus Campaign Update
As Swartz was not able to attend, Frost provided the update.  The Polio Plus Campaign kicked off yesterday with several good auction items coming up including an Ohio State Football photo of Woody Hayes donated by Michael Ayes.  Susan Hubbell and Demi Burden have also helped in securing items for the auction.  Three restaurants have agreed to participate with Buffalo Wild Wings 3 on January 31st.   Coupons will be printed and available to Club Members to take to the restaurant for dining in or for carry-out.  The restaurant will donate 15% of the proceeds to the Lima Rotary Club.  The Committee hopes to do two more restaurants in February and March - Chipotle and Applebee's.

     Interact Club
The Bath Interact Club will attend the January 30th club meeting to do a pinning ceremony for the students.

     Past President's Report          David Runk
PHF/Polio Plus Initiative For New Members
Runk indicated money contributed to Polio Plus is credited toward a Paul Harris Fellowship.  It will be mentioned during the next weeks with the auctions and included on the screen showing updates.

     New Member Drive Ideas
Runk indicated having Susan Crotty, the new City of Lima Community Development Director and two people from Lima Dental at recent meetings as guests.  The Lima Dental employees are interested and would like to get involved.  Runk discussed the criteria for Corporate Memberships which is currently two members in an organization.  Runk is reviewing to see if that criterion has been updated by RI.

Runk is also working on a Membership Brochure.  Decker is doing pictures for it and Runk is writing copy and hopes to have it in another month.

     New Business                       Dave Frost
Frost discussed the selection of candidates for Rotary Board Nomination.  Past President Esther Baldridge, Swartz, Sanchez and Runk will put together a time frame and secure a slate of candidates.  The Club will do a joint ballot with the Foundation Board.

     Resignation                          Rita Brown
  1. A resignation was received from Bob Fett.  Decker made a motion to accept the resignation with regret and Crow seconded the motion.  Board approved.
  2. Applications were received from
    1. Susan Crotty who is replacing Amy Odum at the City of Lima.
    2. Becca Sheidler - Director of Goodwill Easter Seals
Runk made a motion to approve the applications and Ackerman seconded the motion.  Board approved.

Lima Young Professionals Dress for Success Funding Request                     Catheryn Sarno
Dress for Success is a nationwide nonprofit for college students who are entering the workforce or for those who are reentering the workforce and need appropriate professional interview wear.  The Dress for Success program offers donated lightly worn suits and professional wear to this group.  The Lima Community does not currently have such an organization and Sarno reached out to the Young Professionals, Tim Sielschott and Jodie Robinson about starting one.  The group was interested and will do a premier a “Suit Up” event on January 26, 2017.  The organization plans to use the Knights of Columbus Hall for the day to hold their event and is asking the Rotary Club to sponsor the $350 for the venue.  The $350 will include our partnership on all marketing for the event and allow us to be a presence in the community and surrounding communities.  At the “Suit Up” workshop on January 26, 2017, they will explain the suit recycling program to the targeted college students or others in the community in need, along with many other interesting topics.  They will be asking the Rotary Club, and the other service clubs, to donate suits, dresses or accessories.  Runk made a motion that the Rotary Club provide the $350 requested at this time for the “Suit Up” workshop event.  Hubbell seconded the motion.  Board approved.  The club will then submit an application to the Lima Rotary Foundation for reimbursement as this request is more appropriately directed to the Foundation.

There being no further business, Crow made a motion to adjourn and Ackerman seconded the motion.  Board approved.

Respectfully submitted,
Rita Brown, Secretary

The Scoop - January 9, 2017
We are truly "this close" to eradicating polio.
This could be the year Polio is eradicated in the world, said Harry Hooyenga, District 6600 Polio Plus Committee chairman said.
Hooyenga, a member and past president of Kenton Rotary Club, told the Lima Rotary Club Monday Rotary International’s goal of eradicating Polio is within sight. The efforts are now focused on Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
In Afghanistan, 12 cases remain, while that number is 19 in Pakistan. In 2016, Polio returned to Nigeria after no cases had been seen in three years, Hooyenga said. Worldwide, the number has tumbled, from 365,000 cases in 1988 to 35 in 2016.
Hooyenga said world health experts estimate that immunizations for children will need to continue for a decade after the disease is declared eradicated.
You can learn more about Rotary International’s efforts here: https://youtu.be/1Ze0J-ABpIQ
Individual and club Polio Plus donations are multiplied now because of an anonymous matching contribution and matching funds from the Bill and Melina Gates Foundation. For example, an individual contribution of $200 ultimately becomes $1,200, enough money to immunize 2,000 children. A club donation of $3,000 becomes $18,000, enough to immunize 30,000 children. Ultimately, the effort that ends March 31 will raise $800,000, enough money to immunize 1 million children.
The Lima Club makes its Polio Plus push the first quarter of each year, with pledge cards, items for auction, and Rottery proceeds, Lima Rotary Club President Dave Frost said.
In other Rotary business Monday:
Frost announced the club is now selling Reverse Raffle tickets for $100 each. The club is doing the raffle event Feb. 18 instead of a Christmas auction. The evening starts at 5:30, with dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the Civic Center. Additional dinner tickets can be purchased for $25. The Wingate is also running a $72 special for the night. The total purse is $6,000 and the winner does not need to be present to win. Jay Begg is selling tickets.
Lima Rotary Club will help West Central Ohio Red Cross celebrate its centennial anniversary with a blood drive. The drive will take place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Civic Center. The Red Cross will also furnish the speaker at the day’s meeting. Frost would like 100 Rotarians to give blood that day. Sign up at an upcoming meeting, 1-800-Red-Cross or redcrossblood.org.
Drew Fields presented a check to St. Rita’s Mercy Club for $1,830 from the fourth quarter Rottery proceeds. Lima Rotary Club set a donation record in memory of club member Jonalee Schmidt. The creator of Rottery died in 2016, and her husband and daughter were on hand Monday to help present the check.
David Runk named Cat Sarno, Peggy Ehora and Steve Barker Paul Harris fellows and announced XXXXX is now a Paul Harris Fellow plus three.
Next week’s Monday meeting will be held in City Club. Because of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Frost opened the meeting to high school students and members’ children.
