The Scoop -  April 3, 2023
Michael Ayers put service above self in Guatemala.
Michael Ayers joined a group of Rotarians on a service trip to Guatemala in February. They began their trip by delivering and building wheelchairs for disabled children who had never had wheelchairs before. They also delivered school supplies, vitamins, medicine and a cooking stove to rural communities, and installed a water purification system in Coban. "It's time to step up. Every one of us in this room can help. Whether you want to go on a trip or not, or whether you can just help financially, every one of us can do something. When you see the impact, the exceptional impact that we were able to do in just one week's time and being able to help literally thousands of people, it's mind boggling."

Thank you for your service, Michael!

MESA Trucks
The Lima Rotary Club raised $604 to help purchase a new truck for MESA by passing the bucket.
Medical Equipment and Supplies Abroad has two trucks which bring about 99% of the items that we collect to the MESA warehouse. Those trucks are 18 and 22 years old with a combined 600,000 miles of service.  They are failing apart. Our large 26 foot truck was rear-ended last year, and declared totaled by our insurance carrier. We bought the truck from the insurance company for $4,000 on a salvage title. After repairs, we have $17,000 in insurance proceeds to start our truck fund.  The total cost to upgrade our two trucks (a 16 foot and a 26 foot) to approximately 2017 models would be $120,000.  We need to replace both trucks before next winter. Without these tools, it would be impossible to fulfill MESA’s mission to help those in need around the world.

This Rotary year we have made shipments to Mexico, Belize, Panama, St. Vincent, Lebanon, Poland and Ukraine. 99% of those items arrived at our warehouse on our trucks. Please, help us continue to help those in need. We are asking for a special contribution to MESA’s truck fund.  Your contribution can be made in this Rotary year or early in the next Rotary year.

Your contributions can be made payable to MESA and sent to:

Giving
Boost your Rotary impact with tax-wise giving.
Looking for an easy way to increase your impact?

Dear Friends:
Thank you for your support of The Rotary Foundation.  Because of you, Rotarians throughout the world continue the humanitarian work of fighting disease, bringing clean water and sanitation to villages, supporting crisis relief, and uplifting communities.  At a time when taxes are on our mind, I wanted to share an opportunity with you to further support this important work, while saving on 2023 taxes.

A new year has brought more than just resolutions, as new laws related to charitable giving add to the ways that market changes and inflation may impact your 2023 financial plans. Smart Rotarians like you are learning how to increase the impact of their giving with well-timed gifts made directly from their retirement accounts (learn more about new changes here). Join your fellow Rotarians who support The Rotary Foundation with a tax-wise gift from their IRA each year.

  • Donors over 70 ½ can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from their IRA to The Rotary Foundation up to $100,000
  • Find our simple-to-use instructions or use your IRA Administrator’s form to initiate the transfer
  • You may reduce income taxes by taking advantage of this gift type, even if you don’t itemize
  • Make a gift for Paul Harris Society, to fulfill or create a major gift pledge, to become a Major Donor or Arch Klumph Society member, or reach the next level of giving, all while supporting the causes you care most about
  • Establish a fund in Rotary’s Endowment that provides support in your name year after year
  • Designate The Rotary Foundation as a beneficiary of an IRA - Lessen the tax burden for your heirs and secure your Rotary Legacy with your IRA or other qualified retirement plan.
  • Feel good about making the world a better place with Rotary

Whether you’re considering a gift before June 30th, to help your club and District finish the Rotary year strong, or are planning your gift for later in the calendar year, gifts from your IRA could be a tax-wise option.

Your continued support makes lives better in your community and around the world.  Please reach out if I can be of help to you or your financial advisors as you explore your giving options.

Sincerely,

Kevin P. Kelly, CFRE
