Celebrate Community Economic Development
Rotary and Rotaract members are passionate about finding sustainable solutions to the problem of poverty. By supporting projects that focus on creating employment opportunities and generating income, we can reduce poverty. During Community Economic Development Month, consider how you can address community needs and challenges. These Rotary resources can help you start a local project or support an international one:
You can involve community members in your work:
  • Sponsor or work with a Rotary Community Corps, which can engage members of the community where you’re working and help a project become sustainable by empowering local leaders.
  • Contact your district community service chair, who can advise you about developing local projects to address your community’s needs. The service chair can also connect you to local organizations, district committees, and other Rotary groups that focus on service.
You can increase your impact by working with one of Rotary's service and project partners:
  • Ashoka helps find creative solutions to social problems.
  • Habitat for Humanity International provides safe and affordable homes to families in need.
  • The Peace Corps promotes peace and community development.
  • ShelterBox responds to disasters and emergencies with community assessments, temporary shelter, and essential aid.
Visit our Rotary Service in Action blog for stories about members and participants supporting community economic development that will inspire your next project.

Increase your impact
Rotary Community Corps boosts project impact by designing local solutions to local problems

Collaboration between community members and Rotary members plays a crucial role in increasing the impact of our projects. One example is the Ilaw Ng Tahanan Rotary Community Corps, which grew out of a 12-week service project by the Rotary Club of Tiaong-Hiyas, Quezon, Philippines. The project aimed to help mothers in the Lusacan community nurture their own well-being and improve both their health and their families’. The participants developed strong bonds, and they realized that they wanted to keep supporting one another. With the backing of the Rotary club, the participants established the Rotary Community Corps of Ilaw Ng Tahanan (meaning “the one that lights up the home”) to offer peer support to women throughout the community. Together, they will soon open a holistic wellness center that will help mothers with everything from vocational training to navigating the challenges that they and their families face. Visit the RCC’s website to learn more about this successful collaboration and what it has planned.

Avenue of Service: Youth Service

Focusing on Rotary’s young leaders

At Rotary, we’re committed to empowering young leaders as critical partners in driving meaningful and positive change across local and global communities. Read our International Youth Day blog post to meet Hannah Shin, Surabhi Pandey, and Alberto Domenighini. These three former and current Youth Advisory Council members believe that, when Rotary and Rotaract clubs collaborate with young people, they increase the impact of their service projects and develop young leaders.

Enhance Participant Engagement
Attend a project fair

Do you want to support an international service project? Consider attending a project fair. These events, organized by districts, connect clubs and districts that are seeking international service projects with those that want to find international partners. Project fairs typically last two to three days, offer immersive cultural experiences, and may include hands-on service activities or visits to service project sites to help attendees understand local priorities. They’re an effective way to build project partnerships between clubs and districts in different parts of the world. Get information about upcoming project fairs.

Nominate a candidate for the Service Above Self Award

Rotary’s Service Above Self Award honors Rotarians — and now also Rotaractors — who help others by volunteering their time and talents. If you know someone who has demonstrated exemplary service, encourage their governor to nominate them for the Service Above Self Award, one of Rotary’s highest distinctions in service, by 31 October. Only district governors can nominate candidates for this award, and up to 150 recipients are selected each year.
