Is your business prepared for an active shooter?
Cindy Wood and Anne Decker spent a few minutes brainstorming about new members. If only half the current membership brought in a new member - we would reach our goal.
Dick Schroeder reminded all of us to donate to the annual fund - our goal is "Every Year - Every Rotarian."
We received an update on the Allen Lima Youth Leadership youth program, which has gotten off to a good start. The program is funded in part by Rotary donations - another reason to participate in 2014.
Jonalee Schmidt announced that the "Rot-Er-EE" raffles raised almost $900 dollars for our club 's Polio Plus national project.
David Runk then introduced our speaker - Lima City Schools superintendent, Jill Akerman. She gave us an interesting program on their school shooting training program - called ALICE. This approach has been adopted by hundreds of schools in the US to train their staff how to react to an armed intruder with violent intent.
Violence in the schools has been steadily declining, while school shooting have remained flat over the past 30 years. Knowing the proper ways to deal with these emergencies can save lives, even though talking about it can be awkward. Practice is vital, as in over 80% of school shootings - the violent incident is over BEFORE the police arrive on the scene.
