The Lima Rotary Club is improving sanitation in the mountains of Honduras.
In September 2022, the Lima Rotary Club received a grant from Rotary International for $251,151 for sanitation, water, and hygiene in the Merendon Protectorate of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Project organizer Bob Ruehl told that for the past two years, he has been working with the local residents and governments to dig latrines and install handwashing stations. "It might not sound like much, but toilets are a big thing when you're in the mountains and all the pits are being dumped into the streams." Bob told us that they concentrate on training the children about proper hygiene because the children will encourage their parents to improve their habits. This grant is phase 2 of a grant which Bob secured in 2014.
Also at Monday's meeting, Lima Rotary Foundation President Berlin Carroll gave us an update on the Foundation's latest meeting. It awarded two grants: $1,000 to Encore Theatre for improvements to their handicapped parking lot; and $2,500 to purchase a lot at Safety City for construction of a Rotary Amphitheater with the assistance of the Apollo Career Center carpentry class. Berlin also presented Judge Richard Warren with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Lima/Allen County Safe Community Coalition. Congratulations, Judge Warren!
We also inducted two new members into the club Monday: Katrina Goodwin, Assistant General Manager at Wingate by Wyndham and Mike Baxter, Executive Vice President at Tuttle Construction. Welcome to the Lima Rotary Club!
The Scholarship Committee also presented $1,000 scholarships to eight non-traditional students. Since 2001 when the program began, we have awarded 1,261 scholarships totaling $988,085!
