Rotary celebrates American Heart Month.
Lima Rotary Club celebrated American Heart Month with a fun program from Dr. Pamela Gardner and learning hands-only CPR.
Gardner is a cardiology specialist with the Heart Institute of Northwest Ohio.
Hands-only CPR can save lives. Many people who experience cardiac arrest at home, work, or a public location die because they don’t receive immediate CPR from someone on the scene, according to the American Heart Association. What to do? If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 911 and push hard and fast with both hands in the center of the chest to the beat of any tune that is 100 to 120 beats per minute. Immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival.
Why a song? People feel more confident performing Hands-Only CPR and are more likely to remember the correct rate when trained to the beat of a familiar song. Song examples include “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira” or “Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash.
Gardner brought hands-only CPR dummies for Rotarians to practice.
How can you celebrate American Heart Month? The American Heart Association suggests Life’s Simple 7:
  1. Get active
  2. Control cholesterol
  3. Eat better
  4. Manage blood pressure
  5. Lose weight
  6. Reduce blood sugar
  7. Don’t smoke.
Also during the meeting, Teresa Schnipke's husband, Terry Schnipke, entertained us with the details of his run in last year's Boston Marathon.
