The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio needs your help.
The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio is the fifth largest council in the U.S, stretching from the Michigan border to southern Ohio, into Indiana and east towards Columbus. Last year they served over 25,000 girls, 600 of them here in Allen County. Community Development Team Leader Stephanie Kasza told us that they don't have enough adult volunteers for all the girls who want to be in traditional troops, so more than half the local girls are served by school programs. "One of our largest challenges is recruiting adult volunteers. We are looking for both long-term and short-term volunteers. This can be volunteers who are willing to facilitate workshops, lead short-term series, help lead troops, be a camp nurse, or help with administrative needs." In a recent impact study of more than 3,000 Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts, Girl Scouts shined brighter than their peers in leadership, academics, career aspirations, and hope for the future. In academic achievement and active learning alone, Girl Scouts are more likely than non-Girl Scouts to succeed. One of the most visible Girl Scout programs is the cookie sale, which is going on now. The cookie sale helps girls learn about business, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. Girls are taking orders in their neighborhoods through March 16 and cookie booths will be open through the community beginning February 14. Also at Monday's meeting, JJ Truman received her blue badge. Congratulations!
