Warriors Way is changing lives for veterans and youth.
Warriors Way is a nonprofit recreational therapy organization that provides free services in the form of knife making classes to veterans, first responders and youth. David Bates and Jeffery Dauterman told us that their knife making classes are therapeutic because they offer a meditative and hands-on experience. The repetitive process of heating, shaping, and refining the metal allows for deep focus, helping to clear the mind of distractions. The rhythmic hammering and the physicality of working with the steel is calming and grounding, promoting a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. "We've seen incredible outcomes. In 2024 alone, over 780 individuals, including 163 youths between the ages of 6 and 18 participated in our programs. I firmly believe that if we can reach service members before they transition out, we can change the trajectory of their lives. Veterans are most at risk of suicide within the first year of separation and 44% report struggling with integration into society. By connecting them with skill-based therapy, structure and mentorship before discharge, we can dramatically reduce suicide, homelessness and long-term isolation." Warriors Way also offers an archery program for youth. They are a completely volunteer organization and are looking for sponsors to help fund the program.
Also at Monday's meeting, Andrew Rager exchanged his red badge for his blue badge. Congratulations!
