The Scoop... August 1, 2011

President Jerry Courtney called the meeting to order at 12:10 PM.  Past President Jon Rockhold encouraged Rotarians to sign a “thinking of you” card being circulated for Harry Moyer, our oldest living Past President.  Jon then offered the invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.  Jim Chiles led a recitation of “The Four-Way Test”.  Jeff Gast gave the Sergeant-At-Arms report noting numerous guests.  

A unique fellowship report by Bob Fett surprised many with his skillful card trick utilizing several Rotarians and engaging most in attendance.

Announcements included President Jerry recognizing Karel Oxley as the newly elected President of the Buckeye Association of School Administrators.  He also announced Esther Baldridge and Bob Fett have agreed to co-chair the process to identify the “Next Big Project”.  All individuals and companies that contributed $500 or more to the last River Walk project need to immediately confirm with Past President Bruce Opperman how their name should appear on the markers.  Trey Waldren promoted the Rhodes State College 12^th Annual Golf Outing in support of student scholarships.

Three new Rotarians were introduced by their sponsors: Philip Hayne (Peggy Ehora), Sandy Hofacker (Carol Buettner) and Dale Lewellen (Bob Ruehl) followed by their induction.  President Jerry concluded by exchanging a red badge for blue with Paul Crow in recognition of his having completed six months. 

Jim Haidle introduced our own Don Bruns to share a retrospective on the Adman/Hold It Systems experience and unveil the secret behind the “flying carpet”.  The range of Adman clients goes well beyond the familiar local businesses and the jingles we immediately recognize.  Almost everyone knows the Adman’s work for the Kewpee, Pat’s Donuts and Crème, the Barn Out Back, Rigali’s Pizza Village, Lighthouse Pools, All Service Glass and Quick as a Wink.  But would you have guessed Don and his staff have also produced material for Colt Firearms, Prudential Insurance and numerous hotels and resorts? 

But arguably the best known, and prompting many to ask “How do you fly that carpet?” is Lima’s Floor Covering Center.  After showing a video of Rotarian carpet riders including Tim Stanford, Jay Begg, Karel Oxley and Bill Mills, Don shared his secret: a green screen (video background), well scripted pre-videography research, and gifted staff members that make it all look easy.  As a “thank you” for the opportunity to share his story (and admittedly a fair amount of self-promotion) Don presented a check for $100 to the Lima Rotary Foundation.  His generosity extended to a “free” carpet ride captured on disk to all in attendance.

After Don fielded questions, President Jerry adjourned the meeting at 1:00 pm with a quote for the day.
