"Life on a Freighter" may be the title of her next book, but until then, former Rotarian Karel Oxley and her husband Bud told their story of world travel on a giant cargo boat in a short presentation at Rotary.
There were 68 members at the 8/5 meeting, and there were several members who brought wives interested in today's speaker.
Today was another Rotary Spotlight, and there were two questions offered for discussion. First, "What did you want to be when you grew up? and "What would you tell your former self if you could?". It proved to be a humorous discussion, as the dream professions of our members varied from the obvious doctor and fireman to marine biologist and even lion tamer ! Most of the answers to the second question were to buy certain stocks like Apple and Pixar - or to spend more time relaxing instead of working so hard…
Jesse Lowe from Bradfield Center talked about their new Hi Octane Drum-line program. They teach kids the power of music, working as a team, and have been successful in capturing some recent awards. They are now reaching out to all schools in the area for new members - their goal is to complement the school systems programs, not compete with them. Anyone interested should contact the Bradfield Center for more information.
Phil from the Salvation Army mentioned that they are providing school supplies for kids returning to school. Donations can be made to the Salvation army, or you may drop off supplies that any kid would need at school.
Larry Webb introduced our speakers - Karel and Bud Oxley - who described their recent "excellent adventure" on the high seas. Rather than take a traditional cruise, they went around the world on a freighter, which offers a real-life look at our planet without a tourist gloss. Their 5 month trip offered Spartan accommodations, blue-collar meal choices, and no limo service at each port - but they wouldn't trade the experience for anything.
The trip started in Houston - then to Philly - then Europe - Asia - and back to Houston. There are no rigid timetables - the trip actually took 1 month longer due to delays in cargo loading, etc - but that added to the "adventure" element of the trip. For someone looking for a lower cost cruise and a tour of the world without the "rose colored glasses" - you should consider this unique form of travel.
