Rotary members received a lesson in the history of Chautauqua from OSU-Lima school assistant dean and history professor Roger Nimps.
 

      Chautauqua is best known as a traveling tent show that brought speakers to large and small towns across the United States from the 1880s to the early 1930s. From 1900 to 1930s. Nimps said 40 million people would attend in any given year.

      OSU-Lima will hold a Chautauqua to conclude the school’s 50th anniversary celebration. A series of workshops, presentations and music will be held July 6 to 10. Events will happen throughout the community, with period music and a different character presentation beginning at 7 p.m. each night under the Ohio Chautauqua tent on the Quad at OSU-Lima. The schedule includes:

     July 6 – Harriet Tubman

     July 7 – Mary Edwards Walker

     July 8 - - Martin Delany

     July 9 – Mary Chestnut

     July 10 – Abraham Lincoln

   “Nothing could be more fitting than ending our celebration with our Ohio Chautauqua series,” Dean John Snyder told Lima Rotary Club members.

     Dr. Snyder also gave a brief update on OSU-Lima, mentioning the school will offer first-year engineering courses next year.
