The Scoop...June 20, 2011

President Bob McPheron called the meeting of June 20, 2011 to order at 12:10pm.  David Runk gave the invocation and Michael Frueh led the club in America the Beautiful with Micki Vollmer providing piano accompaniment. 

Jim Bronder gave the Sergeant at Arms report.  Three members had guests, there was one visiting Rotarian from Wisconsin and three guests of the club.  87 Rotarians were present at the meeting on June 13^th. 

Jennifer Lawson provided fellowship and fined all Rotarians who are not attending or volunteering for the golf outing on June 22.

Dr. Lynn Thompson announced that the blood clinic attracted 530 patients and raised $12,120 for Rotary, with another $1,000 going to Sertoma.  The next blood clinic will be on 11/5/11.  President McPheron then presented Dr. Thompson with his service award.

Dr. Pai was thanked for his service to the board as his term comes to an end.

Glenn Webb’s widow and daughter were brought on stage to receive the club’s condolences and were presented with Glenn’s watch for 61 years of service to the Lima Rotary Club.

John Gaeth announced six scholarships.  Five of the recipients were able to attend the meeting.  Those receiving scholarships were:

Shameika Beverly who is studying nursing at The Ohio State University

Teresa Dunlap who is at Rhodes State College studying to be an RN

Jessica Herr who is studying Dental Hygiene at Rhodes State College

Rachel Meeks who is studying nursing at The Ohio State University

Andrea Tucker who is at Rhodes studying Medical Billing & Coding

Deloris Webster who is at Rhodes State College studying to be an RN

The Lima Rotary Club has presented 602 scholarships totaling $395,000 in the past ten years.

Harold Bischoff encouraged everyone to attend MESA Fest July 10^th from 4:00-7:00 at the Hancock County Area Agency on Aging and to contribute to MESA.  He’s also looking for 5 Rotarians to travel to San Pedro Sula, Honduras to explore projects in that poverty-stricken nation.

The guest speaker was Nick Kellis, a Hollywood producer who’s worked on such shows as LA Ink, Tattoo, Private Chefs of Beverly Hills American Inventor, and many others.  Nick is a 1984 Shawnee graduate who came back to Lima in the fall of 2010 to be Artist In Residence at Unity Elementary School’s Science & Technology Magnet, a program funded by the Council for the Arts of Greater Lima.

Nick’s mission was to “Create media for the students, by the students!  And there is a job for everybody!”  Sixty five 1^st-4^th graders at Unity got the chance to make videos about their school, including a video version of the morning announcements, an explanation of what the Pledge of Allegiance really means, and a public service announcement discouraging bullying.  Students interviewed for their jobs and were ‘hired’ for positions that fit their aptitude.  They did all the work including scheduling, writing scripts, running the cameras, acting, and editing.  In addition to having a great time, the students learned job skills, inter-grade teamwork, community service, and how to set & achieve goals.  Nick hopes to come back and work with the students on a video brochure and social media campaign for Unity Elementary School.

Bob McPheron came back to the microphone to say his goodbyes as president.  This was his last meeting as president since he will be on vacation the last week of June.  He passed the gavel to Jerry Courtney who adjourned the meeting at 1:04pm.
