The Scoop - May 15, 2023
The Bath High School Interact Club holds their annual pinning ceremony.
Nearly sixty members of the Bath High School Interact Club joined us Monday to recap their year and receive their pins and patches. The Bath High School Interact Club has more 100 members, and students spent the year performing service projects in the school and throughout the community. Some of their projects in the past year have included volunteering at the West Ohio Food Bank, getting Simmons Field ready for the Lima Locos’ opening day, coordinating the Bath Elementary Father Daughter Dance to raise money for scholarships, raking leaves for the elderly and disabled, volunteering at the Special Needs Christmas Party and much more. Those who performed at least 24 hours of service over the past year received either an Interact patch, denoting their first recognition, or a pin for those who had already received their patches. Joe Kitchen is the club's liaison with Interact. "What we try to do is share with them the value and the importance of setting aside a little bit of time to serve others."

We also drew another 50 numbers in the Jay Begg Reverse Raffle. Tom Schmitz was this week's big winner of $500; thank you to Jennifer Mason for selling his ticket. The remaining numbers will be drawn and the grand prizes presented at Monday's meeting.

Jay Begg Reverse Raffle
The first fifty numbers in the Jay Begg reverse raffle were drawn at the May 8, 2023 club meeting. Another fifty numbers will be drawn at the May 15 meeting and the remainder will be drawn at the May 22 meeting. Discussion was held about what to do with the 29 unsold tickets. The club will purchase them so the entire 200 numbers can be drawn, as advertised.
Rex Perry Memorial Golf Outing
Wannemacher reported that sponsors and prize donors are being contacted for this year’s golf outing on August 16. The rain date is August 23.
Allen County Fair Ticket Takers
The Allen County Fair has asked if members of the Lima Rotary Club would be ticket takers for the grandstand events at the 2023 fair. The club would receive $1,000 for its services. 17 people have volunteered at this point. Stemen will contact Troy Elwer and let him know we will be able to take tickets at the fair.
Spring Blood Clinic
The Spring Blood Clinic was held on May 6. The numbers are not yet available, but approximately 300 people attended. It was noted that the Wapakoneta and Delphos Rotary Clubs held their blood clinics around the same time period and that could have hurt attendance. Stemen will contact Lima Memorial Health System and discuss whether a fall blood clinic will be held, and if future clinics can be scheduled at a time when others are not being held.
Change To Lima Rotary Bylaws
Club members have suggested that more than one signature be required on club checks. The board is considering requiring two signatures for checks in excess of $5,000. The matter is being studied and could be brought to the club for a vote at Changing of the Guard.
District Conference
Stemen will see if there is still an opportunity to submit a basket to be auctioned at this weekend’s District Conference.
Shelby Rotary Golf Outing
The Shelby Rotary Club has asked the Lima Rotary Club to enter a team or become a sponsor of their golf outing on July 28. Stemen will announce the golf outing at upcoming club meetings so members can participate if they choose.
Rotary Tour For MESA
The Rotary Bicycle Tour for MESA is June 24-28. It will not visit Lima this year. The club and foundation traditionally make a $5,000 donation to MESA. Stemen is working with the Foundation on this presentation.

District Conference
John Ficorilli recaps the rocking District 6600 Conference.
The 2023 Conference kicked off with a visit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. District 6600 Rotarians enjoyed fellowship over small plates and drinks, followed by a moving speech about the war in Ukraine by John Hewko, General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. John is also a member of the Rotary Club of Kiev, Ukraine. Afterward, Rotarians were free to explore the gift shop and the five levels of the venue.

The keynote speaker for the Saturday morning session was Beth Stubbs, Rotary International Director, who challenge us to tell Our Rotary Story. Beth talked about our clubs securing grant money to complete service projects in our community and then promoting those projects to our local communities to increase Public Image and attract new members.

We were visited by Daniel Campbell of the St Vincent Rotary Club, who gave us an update on the Water for Life Project that our district has helped fund. During the conference, we raised $12,000 to fully fund this project!

We then had breakout sessions reviewing Rotary Grants, Public Image, and Effective Club Management.

During the lunch break on Saturday, we were treated to a 4-Way Test speech from the district winner, and we got to hear from our inbound and outbound exchange students. The keynote speaker, Miquette McMahon from the Rotary Club of Vermilion, gave a moving speech about her life’s journey, which began in abject poverty in Haiti. Because of Rotary, she came to the US and achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. There were no dry eyes in the audience after hearing her story. Rotary truly make a difference in the world. You can learn more here: https://www.teachaiti.org/

After an afternoon of exploring Cleveland, Rotarians regrouped at the Marriott at Key Tower for dinner and District Award presentations, followed by the evening keynote speaker, Dustin Dale, who spoke about "Servant Leadership". Another moving speech. We were then treated to some live entertainment by some of the ladies from the Rotary Club of Tiffin.

Sunday morning, we enjoyed breakfast and received an update on MESA from PDG Gary Newton. MESA has shipped over 30 containers of medical supplies this year, with most going to Ukraine. MESA is in need of two trucks to replace the old 16’ and 26’ trucks that are nearing the end of their usefulness.

John Hewko addressed the group again and challenged our district to focus on membership.

We wrapped up with a memorial service for Rotarians we lost this year, including Alberta Lee.
