The Scoop - July 12, 2021
Family Promise is helping homeless families get back on their feet.
Lima has had a homeless shelter for women and a homeless shelter for men, but until Family Promise came into existence, there was no shelter that served families. Family Promise is an all inclusive, faith-based agency helping homeless families achieve and sustain independence by helping them find employment and housing. Executive Director Hellen Douglas told us that homelessness is a crisis. "33% of the homeless population have children. They're families. They don't want us to find them because they're afraid that their kids will be taken. We want to bring them in. We want to show them love/ We want to give them hope. We want to assist them so they're self sufficient." Family Promise is funded entirely by donations. Board member Rick Shields encouraged us to sign up for golf outing on July 24 which is one of their major fundraisers. Family Promise can shelter three families at a time, but they hope to increase that in the future.
Jeff Fitzgerald began his year as club president by hoping for a normal year. "When we talk about my year we're just talking about getting back to normal, meeting in person. We lost that for a long time. I'm hearing a lot of suggestions. I will listen to all suggestions and promise to do my very best."
Join us tonight for Rotary Night at the Lima Locos!
How about a little baseball with our very own Lima Locos? We begin the new Rotary year with a “Lima Rotary Night at the Lima Locos!” Friday, July 16th, 7:05 pm game time at Simmons Field. This is a chance for some FUN & FELLOWSHIP, promote the Rotary mission and enjoy a Locos game as they fight for a playoff spot.
Contact President Jeff for tickets and join us for what we're sure will be an enjoyable evening.
Movies in the Park

Golf Outing
Register now for the Rex Perry Memorial Golf Outing on July 21 and support our scholarship fund!
This year marks the 21st anniversary of the annual Rex Perry Memorial Golf Outing. It will be held on Wednesday, July 21st at Hidden Creek Golf Course with a rain date of Wednesday, August 25th. The Golf Committee is working closely with Hidden Creek Golf Course to again ensure our participants' safety against COVID.
Last year we had 27 teams competing and raised over $40,000, all of which went to benefit the Rotary Foundation Scholarship Fund. The Rotary Memorial Scholarship Fund selects persons who live or work in Allen County who are in pursuit of a degree or certification and will attend a school or college in Allen County. The intent of the scholarship is to encourage Allen County employees and residents to work and plan for their futures within our county. As of March 2021, over 1,089 adults wishing to continue their education have received scholarships from the Lima Rotary Club. These scholarships total over $817,250. Degrees or certifications can be achieved at the Apollo Career Center (Adult Education), Bluffton University, Rhodes State College, The Ohio State University at Lima and the University of Northwestern Ohio. All residents who live in and employees who work in Allen County are eligible.
The golf outing is open to the public so please invite your friends to join us. Contact Andy Wannemacher today to register or click here to register online.
We have a fun social night planned for July 22.
The Lima Rotary Club's July social meeting will be on the 22nd at Adah Ellerbrock's totally nifty 50s house at 2412 Merit Avenue. There is a theme of 50s retro social attire. You don't have to dress up but it would be fun if you did. Please RSVP to Demi by the 16th so Adah can prepare for the proper amount of people.
