The Lima Rotary Club is proud to have sponsored Tuesday's Regional Spelling Bee.
Opemipo Balogun, a seventh-grade student at Shawnee Middle School won the recent Regional Spelling Bee presented by the Rotary Club of Lima and The Lima News. In addition to being Regional Champ, Opemipo will compete this May at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. She competed against 29 other local students and correctly spelled the word "fatuously." All thirty regional competitors received a Webster dictionary courtesy of Lima Rotary. Opemipo studied her word list 30 minutes a day in preparation for the spelling bee.

The Scoop - March 13, 2023
Downtown Lima is working to create and maintain a dynamic, vital, and sustainable downtown.

Downtown Lima, Inc. was created in 1998 with the vision to promote and market what was then called the “central business district” as the government, financial, commercial and professional office, and cultural center of the Lima community. Executive Director Betsy Billingsley told us that the organization's goal is to aid in the promotion, economic development, and aesthetic design of the downtown Lima. They do that by promoting their members' events and activities, planting and maintaining the beautiful hanging flower baskets that decorate downtown, putting up the banners on the light poles and the holiday decorations, create and host events and fundraisers, act as secretary for the Design Review Board and Historical Preservation Board, and much more. DTL also has a loan program available to help downtown businesses. Billingsley pointed to a number of development projects that are leading to a more vibrant downtown, including the Greater Lima Region Park & Amphitheater being built by the Lima Rotary Club.

Interact
On Saturday, March 11th, the Bath High School Interact Club held their annual Father Daughter Dance fundraiser.
This is our only fundraiser of the year, and proceeds go toward our scholarship program. Each year, we choose seniors who have demonstrated excellence through community volunteering with scholarship money they can use towards their future education.

The dance is a lot of work, which included planning meetings and preparation ahead of time. On the day of the event, the club met early in the day to prepare for the dance, and to decorate. Then, everyone showed up at the school about an hour early to make sure we were all set. The dads and their little girls start showing up at 7 PM for a night of crafts, dancing, refreshments, and fun. The event concludes at 9 PM, but is also followed by a couple hours of tear down and clean up.

We are still taking a look at our expenses, but it looks like the event was a success with enough money to fund the scholarships again this year. It was a long day but well worth it!
