The Lima Rotary Club and the Bath Interact Club will fall into service later this month by packing boxes for two food programs through the West Ohio Food Bank. The two service groups will come together during the regular meeting Monday, October 30, 2023 at the Civic and Convention Center to pack boxes for the Supplemental Food Program and the Snack Pack Program.
The Commodity Supplemental Food Program, or senior food box is a partially federally funded program that is administered through the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services. This program is provided to seniors who are at 130% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines and are 60 years of age or older. Qualified seniors who participate in the program receive a shelf-stable box of foods once per month to help supplement their food budgets. Currently West Ohio Food Bank has a caseload of 1,500 CSFP boxes that are distributed each month throughout its 11-county service area.
The Snack Pack Program is similar to the Backpack Program that is provided to children experiencing food insecurity. Each bag contains 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, 2 snacks. The bag goes to children who are food insecure and whose parents have opted in for the child to receive this bag on Friday afternoon before they leave school. These bags ensure the child has some nutritious food to sustain them during the weekend days until Monday when they can return to school. Currently this program is in Putnam and Hardin County. Within the Allen County area, and with assistance with funding from the United Way of Greater Lima, WOFB focus more on school pantries that address food insecurity issues not only with the child, but with their entire family.
