Great adventures begin with one small step.
The Armstrong Air and Space Museum was formally dedicated on July 20, 1972 in Wapakoneta, Neil Armstrong's home town. Communications Director Logan Rex told us that the museum was announced by Governor Rhodes on July 21, 1969 on the front porch of Steven and Viola Armstrong's home, while their son was still on the moon. The state committed $500,000 to the project and the rest came from donations. The museum features many one-of-a-kind artifacts including the Gemini VIII spacecraft, Neil Armstrong’s Gemini and Apollo spacesuits, the Aeronca Champion, and an Apollo 11 moon rock as well as several interactive exhibits, audio/visual elements, and simulators. The 56-foot dome in the center of the museum houses the Astro Theater. Logan told us that as part of the American 250 celebration, the Armstrong Air & Space Museum is offering a variety of special events and programs, including two new specialized tours that take a deeper dive into Armstrong's contributions to history and the State of Ohio. More than 40,000 people from more than 100 countries tour the museum every year.
