Mayor Berger had good news during his State-of-the-City address.
Many guests today, due to the Mayor's address. Esther Baldridge ran the meeting today, and chided our president for missing the meeting. In his absence, those present voted unanimously to make Mike president for another year.
Bob Fett handled Fellowship - sharing a story that almost certainly did NOT come from the mayor.
Phil Osmon corrected a recent Lima News story - pointing out that Hofeller, Hiatt & Clark sells fine products made in Canada.
March 2 is the district Gala - entitled "Sweet Charity" - to help Toledo area non profits. Contact Esther if you are interested in attending.
Anne Decker presented 2 checks on behalf of the Rotary foundation today. They were presented to the Allen Lima Youth Leadership Program and the Guiding Light Maternity Home.
Our program today was Mayor Berger's State-of the-City Address. The mayor was very happy to report that 2013 was a good year for the city, with crime down over 10% in all neighborhoods. He informed us of a new program, which identifies the cities most violent criminals, and working through their parole officers - brings these individuals in and educates them on the impact of violence in the community, the programs available to help them "fly right" - and that if they don't, they will be prosecuted by both local and if appropriate - federal officials. This appears to be bearing fruit, and periodic updates are planned.
The city is sound financially - but faces continued challenges from the state legislature, which has recently trimmed over 3 million dollars from funds originally budgeted for Lima. (Over 10% of the city budget) The mayor commented that as soon as they adjust their numbers from a state cut - another takes it's place. He suggested that interested members should contact our state reps, and inform them that the downward spiral of state funds to local coffers must stop. Continued cuts will affect vital local services - ones often mandated by the state in the first place...
AEP is working with the city to fund new lighting for Simmons Field and the Lima Locos. Virtually every local business and residence can help the city gain "points" - and 750 are needed in order to raise the $140,000 needed. Go to www.energysavers2014.com for note information.
Once again - our mayor - now in his 7th term - is happy with the achievements of 2013, and the progress that 2014 will bring...
