BGSU has a fast-track program for those who want to be teachers.
To address the teacher shortage, the state of Ohio selected five institutions to receive Noyce Grants to help interested individuals become teachers. Bowling Green State University is one of those institutions. Dr. Angela Falter Thomas told us that the program is for people who already have a four year degree and are interested in a career change. The premise is that the individuals already have the content knowledge, shown by their college degrees and their passage on a state exam regarding their knowledge of that subject. They just need to learn how to teach. Dr. Falter Thomas told us that BGSU is especially interested in recruiting STEM teachers and will fund 95% of the program for those who want to teach science, technology, engineering, math or computer science in middle school and high school. The grant will fund 8 potential teachers each year for the next four years. Those who receive the grant must agree to serve as a full-time stem teacher in a high-need school for a total of two years within eight years of completing the program.
