The Allen County Airport is a hidden gem.
The Allen County Airport has been serving our community since 1933. "We have a tremendous airport in our county. It's one of the best county airports in Ohio," says pilot and board member Larry Webb. Larry told us that in recent years, the airport has made a number of improvements, including lengthening the runway and adding buildings. Larry told us that very little local tax dollars have been spent on those improvements with 90% of them being funded by the FAA and 5% being funded by the state of Ohio. Airport Manager Josh Tattrie told us that the airport provides services for many different types of aviation including small private planes, corporate planes, and even Airforce One. There are also a number of organ donation flights and Angel Pilots who donate their time and airplanes to fly patients to distant medical appointments. Flight Instructor David Buettner says that the airport is a great place to learn to fly. The minimum age to get a private pilot's license is 17. It takes about a year to become a pilot and you can expect the cost to be around $14,000. Approximately 32,000 flights take off and land at the Allen County Airport every year.
Also at Monday's meeting, we welcomed new member Jason Bice, Funeral Director Apprentice at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral home. Please make him welcome!
