Students with the Lima South Science & Technology Department, First Responders and Kathy Luhn of the Allen County Health Department made up the day's program.
 

The meeting was called to order by President Jerry Courtney at 12:05 p.m.

 

Following the invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Rotarian Rita Brown, Jennifer Lawson initiated the singing of “America the Beautiful.”

 

The Sergeant-at-Arms report was eloquently given by Harold Bischoff.  It was noted that there were 88 Rotarians present at the May 14th Lima Rotary Club meeting.  In honor of EMS Week Rotarian Sam Bassett had as his guest Chief Joe Kitchen with the Lima Fire Department.  Rotarian Cory Melvin had 15 guests of LACP from various EMS units in the Lima area.  He also spoke to the Club about National EMS week which is from May 20th to May 26th.

 

There was one visiting Rotarian, David Grimm from Essex Junction, VT who was a guest of Jay Begg.  Rotarian Bob Ruehl had a make-up at Findlay and then it was noted that the speaker at the June 4th Rotary Meeting would be Timothy McNutt with Dominion East Ohio.

 

Rotarian Judge Warren provided the Fellowship.  He fined all Rotarians who hadn’t volunteered to help out or play in the Rotary Golf Tournament to be held on June 27th.

 

President Courtney then introduced the students with the Lima South Science & Technology Department.  The students shared Farmer Rick slides to describe what they learned about how food crops are grown and prepared.  The students thanked the Club for their support of this program.

 

Rotarian David Frost on behalf of the Lima Rotary Foundation indicated that at their most recent meeting that three grants were awarded:

  • Allen County Park District                                      $2,000.00
  • Lima Allen County College Access                        $1,000.00
  • Dare Program                                                           $  500.00

He said that these grants concluded the Foundation’s activities for the current Rotary year and that he would provide quarterly reports to the Membership during the next Rotary year.

 

Rita Brown announced that she and Mary Elmquist-Lane are working on the Changing of the Guard Party which will be held on June 13th at the Shawnee Country Club.  Harold Bischoff then reviewed the positive impact that the 3-H project in the Merendon Mountains of Honduras had on the residents of the Merendon Reserve.  Projects such as the 3-H effort are made possible by the efforts of MESA . He noted that the MESA Tour—the major fund raising effort for MESA—will overnight in Lima on Tuesday, June 12th.  It is customary for a host Club on the Tour to present a check to the riders when they visit a Rotary Club on their route.  The Members were asked to make their commitments on the forms provided on the tables at the meeting.

 

Jerry Courtney then introduced the speaker for the Program, Kathy Luhn, Health Director for Allen County.  She said that much of what the Health Department does is behind the scenes of traditional healthcare delivery or taken for granted.  Her department is involved in administering immunizations, maternal health, recording all births and deaths and enforcing the State’s No Smoking Law.  She said that as a society we are starting to realize that health is something that we should keep—not try to get back later.

 

As a Health Department she follows the four goals:

  1. Build a Healthy Community;
  2. Expand Preventive Services;
  3. Make Healthy Choices;
  4. Fight/Fix Health Disparities;

 

She said the building a healthy community starts by having a safe home, providing education to patients and insuring safety in the workplace.  She agreed with the efforts of the Healthy Communities Project discussed by Mr. Fenton several weeks ago who said we have to:

Show Up, Speak Up and Act Up (as a role model)

 

She emphasized that obesity is an issue for our culture and that we should concentrate on foods that we enjoy but to find a proper balance.

 

Concerning prevention she said that the Health Department provides many types of screenings.  One question dealt with a recent recommendation that baby boomers should be tested for hepatitis C and if it is undetected that it can lead to liver cancer.

 

President Jerry again reminded the Club that there is no meeting on Monday, May 28th due to it being Memorial Day.  The drawing was won by John Snyder with the Teddy Bear Fund being the recipient of the funds.  The meeting was adjourned at 12:50 p.m.
